It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) that we used to give one sa’ of grain, or one sa’ of barley, or one sa’ of dates, or one sa’ of cheese, or one sa’ of dried grapes as Sadaqat al-Fitr.

And with this chain (it is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar, may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, made it obligatory in Ramadan upon the people, from among the Muslims, for every person, one sa’ of dates or one sa’ of barley, whether he is free or a slave, male or female.
