Hadith Number: 511
Malik bin Aws bin Hadathan al-Nasri (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that he wanted to exchange one hundred dinars. He says that Sayyiduna Talha bin Ubaidullah (may Allah be pleased with him) called me, so we bargained with each other until our deal was finalized. He (Talha, may Allah be pleased with him) began turning the dinars over in his hand and then said: "Wait until my treasurer comes from the forest (al-Ghabah)." Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) was listening to our conversation. Then Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "By Allah! Do not separate from him (Talha, may Allah be pleased with him) until you take the money from him." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Gold for gold is usury except when it is hand to hand, and silver for silver is usury except when it is hand to hand, and wheat for wheat is usury except when it is hand to hand, and dates for dates is usury except when it is hand to hand, and barley for barley is usury except when it is hand to hand."

It is narrated from Mujahid (bin Jabr, may Allah have mercy on him) that I was with Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) when a goldsmith came and asked him: O Abu Abdur Rahman! I melt gold and make jewelry from it, then I sell it at a price higher than its weight; I take this extra amount for my work? So Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) forbade him from this. The goldsmith kept repeating his question, and Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) kept forbidding him, until he reached the door of the mosque or his mount and intended to mount it. Then Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: Dinar is for dinar and dirham is for dirham; there is no excess between them. This is the instruction our Prophet gave us, and this is what we instruct you.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) and Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) appointed a man as the governor (amir) over the region of Khaybar. He brought high-quality dates. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) asked him: "Are all the dates of Khaybar like this?" He replied: "No, by Allah! We give two sa' of dates and take one sa' of this kind of dates, and we give three sa' and take two sa'." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do not do so. Sell the ordinary dates for dirhams (money), then buy the high-quality dates with the money."
