Abu Salamah narrated that his noble father, Sayyiduna Abu Darda’ (may Allah be pleased with him), went to visit him during his illness. Sayyiduna Abu Darda’ (may Allah be pleased with him) said to him:“Among your people, no one maintains ties of kinship with me more than you do.”So Abdur Rahman bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with him) said:“I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say, relating from his Lord, the Mighty and Majestic, that the Lord Almighty said: ‘I am the Rahman (the Most Merciful), and I have derived the womb (rahm) from My Name. Whoever joins it, I will join him, and whoever severs it, I will sever him.’”

Abu Salamah narrated from his father Abdur Rahman, who narrated from the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) that he said:“Indeed, Allah the Exalted has made fasting in Ramadan obligatory, and I have made its night prayer a Sunnah. Whoever fasts during this (month) and stands (in prayer) with faith, certainty, and seeking goodness, then this act will be an expiation for his past sins.”Or as the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said.

Nadr bin Shiban al-Hadani narrated, he said: We said to Abu Salamah bin Abdur Rahman: Tell us the most excellent hadith about Ramadan that you have heard from your father. Abu Salamah said: Abdur Rahman bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated to us, he heard from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) that when he mentioned Ramadan, he gave it superiority over other months, just as Allah Almighty has given it superiority. He said: "Indeed, the month of Ramadan is such a month whose fasting Allah Almighty has made obligatory upon the Muslims, and its night prayer I have made a Sunnah. So whoever fasts in it with faith and seeking reward, and stands in prayer during its nights, he will be cleansed of his sins as on the day his mother gave birth to him."

Abu Salamah narrated from his father Abdur Rahman bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:“Give charity, for indeed I wish to send it forward.”So Abdur Rahman bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with him) said: O Messenger of Allah! I have four thousand. I give two thousand as a loan to Allah the Exalted, and I leave two thousand for my family. He said that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:“May Allah bless what you have given, and may Allah bless what you have kept for your family.”(Abdur Rahman bin Awf, may Allah be pleased with him) said: A man from the Ansar came and said: O Messenger of Allah! I give one sa’ as a loan to my Lord the Exalted, and I keep one sa’ for my family. So the hypocrites criticized this and further said: By Allah! Ibn Awf has given only for show. Then they said: Is Allah and His Messenger not in need of this sa’ of his? So Allah the Exalted revealed this verse: «الَّذِينَ يَلْمِزُونَ الْمُطَّوِّعِينَ مِنَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ فِي الصَّدَقَاتِ وَالَّذِينَ لَا يَجِدُونَ إِلَّا جُهْدَهُمْ فَيَسْخَرُونَ مِنْهُمْ سَخِرَ اللَّـهُ مِنْهُمْ وَلَهُمْ عَذَابٌ أَلِيمٌ» [9-التوبة:79] “Those who criticize the believers who give charity willingly, and those who find nothing to give except what they earn with their own effort, and they mock them—Allah will mock them, and for them is a painful punishment.”

Abu Salamah bin Abdur Rahman narrated: He said that Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) set out towards Syria, and with him also went the companions (may Allah be pleased with them) of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). There, Abu Ubaidah bin Jarrah (may Allah be pleased with him) welcomed him, and at that time he was the governor of Syria. He said to Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him): "You should go back; with me is the roar of Hell and its burning heat." He (Umar) said: "I am not going to turn back; this is a condition which Allah the Exalted has decreed. We can neither go beyond it nor retreat from it." So he (Abu Ubaidah) said: "You must take the companions of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) back, otherwise I will tear my shirt." He (Umar) said: "I am not going to do that." Then Abdur Rahman (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: 'When you hear of the outbreak of this disease in a land, do not go towards it.'" Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "O Abu Muhammad! Did you hear this from the Messenger of Allah?" He said: "Yes!" So Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) turned back upon hearing this, and the people with him also turned back.
