Abdur Rahman bin Abi Bakr
Hadith Number: 29
حدثنا يوسف بن بهلول، قال: حدثنا ابن إدريس، قال: حدثنا ابن إسحاق، قال: حدثنا عباد بن عبد الله بن الزبير، عن ابيه، قال: حدثنيه عبد الرحمن بن ابي بكر، وغيره، عن عبد الرحمن بن عوف، قال: كان امية بن خلف لي صديقا بمكة، وكان اسمي عبد عمرو، وتسميت حين اسلمت عبد الرحمن، وكان يلقاني بمكة فيقول: ارغبت عن اسم سماكه ابواك، فاقول: نعم، فيقول: فإني لا اعرف عبد الرحمن، فاجعل بيني وبينك شيئا ادعوك به، اما انت فلا تجبني باسمك الاول، واما انا فلا ادعوك بما لا اعرف، قال: قلت فاجعل يا ابا علي ما شئت، قال: فانت عبد الإله حتى إذا كان يوم بدر مررت به وهو واقف معه ابنه علي آخذ بيده قال [ص: 73]: ومعي ادراع قد استلبتها فانا احملها، فلما رآني قال: يا عبد عمرو، فلم اجبه، قال: يا عبد الإله، قال: قلت: نعم، قال: هل لك، فإنكم خير لك من هذه الادراع التي معك قال: قلت نعم هؤلاء خير، إذن فقال: فطرحت الادراع من يدي فاخذت بيده وبيد ابنه وهو يقول: ما رايت كاليوم اما لكم حاجة في اللبن؟ قال: ثم خرجت امشي بهما.
Abdur Rahman bin Abi Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) and others narrated from Sayyiduna Abdur Rahman bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: Umayyah bin Khalaf was my friend in Makkah, and in the days of ignorance my name was Abd Amr. When I became Muslim, I changed my name to Abdur Rahman. When he met me in Makkah, he would say:“Do you not like the name your parents gave you?”I would say:“Yes.”Then he would say:“Well, I do not know this ‘Abdur Rahman’. Just tell me a special name by which I can call you. I don’t know what’s with you that when I call you Abd Amr, you don’t even answer me, and I have no trouble calling you by a name I recognize.”He said: I said,“O Abu Ali! Call me whatever you wish.”He said:“I will call you ‘Abd al-Ilah’.”(That is, he named you ‘Abd al-Ilah’.) On the day of the Battle of Badr, I passed by him while he was standing holding his son Ali’s hand. And I had some armors which I had taken from the disbelievers. When he saw me, he said:“O Abd Amr!”I did not answer. He said:“O Abd al-Ilah!”I said:“Yes.”He said:“I am better for you than these armors.”I said:“Yes.”So I threw the armors from my hand and took hold of his and his son’s hand.
