Giving three divorces at once explained
Hadith Number: 641
Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrated: During the time of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and for two years of the leadership/caliphate of Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), three divorces were counted as only one divorce. Then Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "You were commanded to be patient and forbearing regarding divorce, but you hastened in your forbearance, so we have enforced your hastiness upon you."

It is narrated from Tawoos (may Allah have mercy on him) that Abu As-Sahba said to Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them): Present something from your words—were not three divorces counted as one during the time of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him)? The matter was like that. When the era of Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) came, people began to give divorce without thinking, so he enforced it upon them.

It is narrated from Tawoos (may Allah have mercy on him) that Abu As-Sahba said to Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them): "Do you not know that during the time of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and for three years of the caliphate of Sayyiduna Abu Bakr and Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with them), three divorces were counted as only one?" So Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) replied: "Yes."
