Chapter: Explanation of the Verse:“Whoever Witnesses the Month, Let Him Fast It”
Hadith Number: 1772
Sayyiduna Salamah bin Akwa’ (may Allah be pleased with him) said: When this verse was revealed,“Those who have the ability to fast but do not, should pay the fidyah of feeding a poor person,” [بقرة: 184/2] then among us, whoever wished would not fast and would give the fidyah, until this command was revealed «فَمَنْ شَهِدَ مِنْكُمُ الشَّهْرَ فَلْيَصُمْهُ» that is,“Whoever witnesses the month of Ramadan should fast,” [البقرة: 185/2] and the previous option (of not fasting) was abrogated.
