It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar that I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "Kill every snake, especially the striped snake and the snake with a cut tail, because both of these cause miscarriage and loss of eyesight." Therefore, whenever I saw a snake, I would kill it. One day, Sayyiduna Abu Lubabah or Yazid bin Khattab saw me chasing a snake to kill it, and I told them that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had ordered their killing. So they said: "Afterwards, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade killing the snakes that live in houses."

Husain bin Saib says that when Allah accepted the repentance of Sayyiduna Abu Lubabah, he said, "O Messenger of Allah! As part of my repentance, I will leave my people's house and come to live in your neighborhood, and I will dedicate all my wealth for Allah and His Messenger." The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, "A third from you will also be sufficient."

Nafi' reports that Sayyiduna Ibn Umar used to order the killing of all kinds of snakes, until one day Sayyiduna Abu Lubabah sought permission to enter the mosque through his window and saw that they were killing a snake. Sayyiduna Abu Lubabah narrated to them this hadith: that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade killing the snakes that live in houses, and ordered the killing of the striped and short-tailed snake.
