حَدِيثُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَبَّاسٍ عَنْ أُبَيِّ بْنِ كَعْبٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ تَعَالَى عَنْهُمَا
Hadith of Abd Allah ibn Abbas from Ubayy ibn Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with them)

حدثنا عبد الله، حدثني ابو بكر عبد الله بن محمد بن ابي شيبة ، حدثنا عبيد الله بن موسى ، عن إسرائيل ، عن ابي إسحاق ، عن سعيد بن جبير ، عن ابن عباس ، قال: كنا عنده، فقال القوم إن نوفا الشامي يزعم ان الذي ذهب يطلب العلم ليس موسى بني إسرائيل، وكان ابن عباس متكئا، فاستوى جالسا، فقال: كذلك يا سعيد؟ قلت: نعم، انا سمعته، يقول: ذاك، فقال ابن عباس كذب نوف، حدثني ابي بن كعب، انه سمع النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم، يقول: " رحمة الله علينا وعلى صالح، رحمة الله علينا وعلى اخي عاد"، ثم قال:" إن موسى بينا هو يخطب قومه ذات يوم، إذ قال لهم: ما في الارض احد اعلم مني، واوحى الله إليه ان في الارض من هو اعلم منك، وآية ذلك ان تزود حوتا مالحا، فإذا فقدته، فهو حيث تفقده، فتزود حوتا مالحا، فانطلق هو وفتاه، حتى إذا بلغ المكان الذي امروا به، فلما انتهوا إلى الصخرة، انطلق موسى يطلب، ووضع فتاه الحوت على الصخرة، واضطرب، فاتخذ سبيله في البحر سربا، قال: فتاه إذا جاء نبي الله حدثته، فانساه الشيطان، فانطلقا، فاصابهم ما يصيب المسافر من النصب والكلال، ولم يكن يصيبه ما يصيب المسافر من النصب والكلال، حتى جاوز ما امر به، فقال موسى لفتاه آتنا غداءنا، لقد لقينا من سفرنا هذا نصبا، قال له: فتاه يا نبي الله، ارايت إذ اوينا إلى الصخرة، فإني نسيت ان احدثك، وما انسانيه إلا الشيطان، فاتخذ سبيله في البحر سربا، قال: ذلك ما كنا نبغي، فرجعا على آثارهما قصصا، يقصان الاثر، حتى إذا انتهيا إلى الصخرة، فاطاف بها، فإذا هو مسجى بثوب له، فسلم عليه، فرفع راسه، فقال له: من انت؟ قال موسى قال من موسى؟ قال موسى بني إسرائيل، قال: اخبرت ان عندك علما، فاردت ان اصحبك، قال: إنك لن تستطيع معي صبرا، قال: ستجدني إن شاء الله صابرا، ولا اعصي لك امرا، قال: فكيف تصبر على ما لم تحط به خبرا؟! قال: قد امرت ان افعله، قال: ستجدني إن شاء الله صابرا، قال: فإن اتبعتني، فلا تسالني عن شيء حتى احدث لك منه ذكرا، فانطلقا حتى إذا ركبا في السفينة، خرج من كان فيها، وتخلف ليخرقها، قال: فقال له موسى تخرقها لتغرق اهلها، لقد جئت شيئا إمرا، قال: الم اقل إنك لن تستطيع معي صبرا؟ قال: لا تؤاخذني بما نسيت، ولا ترهقني من امري عسرا، فانطلقا حتى إذا اتوا على غلمان يلعبون على ساحل البحر، وفيهم غلام ليس في الغلمان غلام انظف يعني منه، فاخذه فقتله، فنفر موسى عند ذلك، وقال: اقتلت نفسا زكية بغير نفس؟ لقد جئت شيئا نكرا، قال: الم اقل لك إنك لن تستطيع معي صبرا؟ قال: فاخذته ذمامة من صاحبه، واستحيا، فقال: إن سالتك عن شيء بعدها، فلا تصاحبني، قد بلغت من لدني عذرا، فانطلقا حتى إذا اتيا اهل قرية لئاما، استطعما اهلها، وقد اصاب موسى جهد، فلم يضيفوهما، فوجدا فيها جدارا يريد ان ينقض، فاقامه، قال له موسى مما نزل بهم من الجهد لو شئت لاتخذت عليه اجرا، قال: هذا فراق بيني وبينك، فاخذ موسى بطرف ثوبه، فقال: حدثني، فقال: اما السفينة، فكانت لمساكين يعملون في البحر، وكان وراءهم ملك ياخذ كل سفينة غصبا، فإذا مر عليها، فرآها منخرقة تركها، ورقعها اهلها بقطعة خشبة، فانتفعوا بها، واما الغلام فإنه كان طبع يوم طبع كافرا، وكان قد القي عليه محبة من ابويه، ولو اطاعاه لارهقهما طغيانا وكفرا، فاردنا ان يبدلهما ربهما خيرا منه زكاة واقرب رحما، ووقع ابوه على امه فعلقت، فولدت منه خيرا منه زكاة واقرب رحما، واما الجدار فكان لغلامين يتيمين في المدينة وكان تحته كنز لهما وكان ابوهما صالحا، فاراد ربك ان يبلغا اشدهما ويستخرجا كنزهما رحمة من ربك، وما فعلته عن امري ذلك تاويل ما لم تسطع عليه صبرا" .
Hazrat Saeed bin Jubair says that I said to Hazrat Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) that Nauf Bikali thinks that the Musa (of Hazrat Khidr, peace be upon him) is not the Musa of Bani Israel, but rather some other Musa. Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) said, "The enemy of Allah lies! Hazrat Ubayy bin Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated this hadith to me, that the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Once Hazrat Musa (peace be upon him) was standing and giving a sermon before Bani Israel. After the sermon ended, a man asked, 'Who is the most knowledgeable person?' Hazrat Musa (peace be upon him) replied, 'I am the most knowledgeable.' Allah Almighty revealed to Hazrat Musa (peace be upon him) that among My servants, there is a servant who is more knowledgeable than you. Hazrat Musa (peace be upon him) said, 'O Lord, how can I meet him?' It was commanded, 'Take a (roasted) fish with you in a basket (and set out on your journey). Where that fish is lost, you will find that person.' Hazrat Musa (peace be upon him) took a fish, put it in the basket, and set out, taking with him a servant, Yusha bin Nun. As they walked, when they reached a rock, both (stopped and) Hazrat Musa (peace be upon him) lay his head on the rock and slept. Meanwhile, the fish fluttered out of the basket and made its way into the river, making a tunnel as it went. Hazrat Musa (peace be upon him) woke up, and Musa said to his servant, 'We have become very tired from this journey, now bring the food.' And Musa had not felt any fatigue until they had passed the appointed place; rather, he began to feel tired only after passing the appointed place. The servant said, 'What can I say? When we reached that rock, I forgot the fish there (and I did not mention it to you).' Hazrat Musa (peace be upon him) said, 'That is the place we were seeking.' So, retracing their steps, they returned, step by step. As soon as they reached the rock, they saw a man with his head wrapped in a cloth. Hazrat Musa (peace be upon him) greeted him with salam. Khidr said, 'Where is salam customary in your land? (How did you greet me with salam?)' Hazrat Musa (peace be upon him) said, 'I am Musa.' Khidr said, 'The Musa of Bani Israel?' I said, 'Yes.' After that, Hazrat Musa (peace be upon him) said, 'May I accompany you on the condition that you teach me some of the knowledge which Allah has granted you?' Hazrat Khidr (peace be upon him) said, 'You will not be able to remain patient with me (you will interrupt in between), because Allah Almighty has given me a special portion which He has not given you, and He has given you knowledge of which I am unaware.' (Hazrat Musa (peace be upon him) said, 'If Allah wills, you will find me steadfast, I will not disobey your command.') Eventually, both set out walking along the riverbank, and there was no boat. Meanwhile, a boat passed by; they spoke to the boatmen about boarding. The people recognized Hazrat Khidr (peace be upon him), so the boatmen let both of them board without fare. After that, Khidr (peace be upon him) inspected the boat, took out an adze, and removed a plank from the boat. Hazrat Musa (peace be upon him) said, 'What have you done? These people let us board without fare, and you have damaged their boat and wanted to drown everyone! You have done a strange thing.' Khidr (peace be upon him) said, 'Did I not tell you that you would not be able to remain patient with me?' Hazrat Musa (peace be upon him) said, 'Do not call me to account for my forgetfulness, and do not make my task difficult for me.' Meanwhile, a bird came and dipped its beak into the sea. Hazrat Khidr (peace be upon him) said, 'My knowledge and your knowledge cannot diminish Allah's knowledge even as much as this bird has diminished the water of the sea.' Then both of them disembarked from the boat and set out. On the seashore, a boy was playing with other children. Khidr (peace be upon him) caught him by the head and broke his neck with his hand. Hazrat Musa (peace be upon him) said, 'You have killed an innocent soul without reason; you have done a terrible thing.' Khidr (peace be upon him) said, 'Did I not tell you that you would not be able to remain patient with me?' Musa said, 'Alright, after this, if I ask you anything, then do not keep me with you; you have already excused me much.' Eventually, both set out again. As they walked, they reached a village and asked the villagers for food, but they refused to host them. There they saw a wall that was about to collapse; Hazrat Khidr (peace be upon him) gestured with his hand and set it straight.

حدثنا عبد الله، حدثنا عبد الله بن إبراهيم المروزي ، حدثني هشام بن يوسف في تفسير ابن جريج الذي املاه عليهم اخبرني يعلى بن مسلم ، وعمرو بن دينار ، عن سعيد بن جبير ، يزيد احدهما على الآخر وغيرهما، قال: قد سمعت يحدثه، عن سعيد بن جبير، قال: إنا لعند عبد الله بن عباس في بيته، إذ قال: سلوني، فقلت: ابا عباس جعلني الله فداءك بالكوفة رجل قاص يقال له نوف، يزعم انه ليس موسى بني إسرائيل! اما عمرو بن دينار، فقال: كذب عدو الله، واما يعلى بن مسلم، فقال: قال ابن عباس، حدثني ابي بن كعب ، قال: قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم: " إن موسى رسول الله ذكر الناس يوما، حتى إذا فاضت العيون، ورقت القلوب، ولى فادركه رجل، فقال: يا رسول الله، هل في الارض احد اعلم منك؟، قال: لا، قال: فعتب عليه، إذ لم يرد العلم إلى الله، فاوحى الله إليه إن لي عبدا اعلم منك، قال: اي رب، وانى؟ قال: مجمع البحرين، قال: اي رب، اجعل لي علما اعلم ذلك به، قال: لي عمرو، وقال: حيث يفارقك الحوت، وقال: يعلى خذ حوتا ميتا حيث ينفخ فيه الروح، فاخذ حوتا فجعله في مكتل، قال: لفتاه لا اكلفك إلا ان تخبرني حيث يفارقك الحوت، قال: ما كلفتني كثيرا، فذلك قوله تبارك وتعالى إذ قال موسى لفتاه سورة الكهف آية 60 يوشع بن نون، ليست عن سعيد بن جبير، قال: فبينا هو في ظل صخرة في مكان ثريان، إذ تضرب الحوت وموسى نائم، قال: فتاه لا اوقظه، حتى إذا استيقظ، نسي ان يخبره، وتضرب الحوت حتى دخل البحر، فامسك الله عليه جرية البحر، حتى كان اثره في حجر، فقال لي عمرو وكان اثره في حجر، وحلق إبهاميه واللتين تليانهما، لقد لقينا من سفرنا هذا نصبا، قال: قد قطع الله عنك النصب، ليست هذه عن سعيد بن جبير فاخبره، فرجعا فوجدا خضرا، فقال لي عثمان بن ابي سليمان على طنفسة خضراء على كبد البحر، قال سعيد بن جبير: مسجى ثوبه، قد جعل طرفه تحت رجليه، وطرفه تحت راسه فسلم عليه موسى، فكشف عن وجهه، وقال: هل بارضك من سلام؟ من انت؟ قال: انا موسى، قال موسى بني إسرائيل؟ قال: نعم، قال: فما شانك؟ قال: جئت لتعلمني مما علمت رشدا، قال: اما يكفيك ان انباء التوراة بيدك، وان الوحي ياتيك، يا موسى، إن لي علما لا ينبغي ان تعلمه، وإن لك علما لا ينبغي ان اعلمه، فجاء طائر، فاخذ بمنقاره، فقال: والله ما علمي وعلمك في علم الله إلا كما اخذ هذا الطائر بمنقاره من البحر، حتى إذا ركبا في السفينة وجدا معابر صغارا تحمل اهل هذا الساحل إلى هذا الساحل عرفوه، فقالوا: عبد الله الصالح، فقلنا لسعيد خضر؟ قال: نعم، لا يحملونه باجر فخرقها، ووتد فيها وتدا، قال موسى: اخرقتها لتغرق اهلها لقد جئت شيئا إمرا، قال مجاهد نكرا، قال: الم اقل إنك لن تستطيع معي صبرا، وكانت الاولى نسيانا، والثانية شرطا، والثالثة عمدا، قال: لا تؤاخذني بما نسيت، ولا ترهقني من امري عسرا، فلقيا غلاما فقتله، قال يعلى بن مسلم، قال سعيد بن جبير: وجدا غلمانا يلعبون، فاخذ غلاما كافرا كان ظريفا، فاضجعه، ثم ذبحه بالسكين، قال: اقتلت نفسا زكية لم تعمل بالحنث؟! فانطلقا، فوجدا جدارا يريد ان ينقض، فاقامه، قال سعيد بيده هكذا، ورفع يده، فاستقام، قال يعلى فحسبت ان سعيدا، قال: فمسحه بيده، فاستقام، قال: لو شئت لاتخذت عليه اجرا، قال سعيد: اجرا ناكله"، قال: وكان يقرؤها وكان وراءهم سورة الكهف آية 79 وكان ابن عباس يقرؤها وكان امامهم ملك، يزعمون عن غير سعيد، انه قال: هذا الغلام المقتول يزعمون ان اسمه جيسور، قال: ياخذ كل سفينة غصبا، واراد إذا مرت به ان يدعها لعيبها، فإذا جاوزوا، اصلحوها، فانتفعوا بها بعد، منهم من يقول سدوها بقارورة، ومنهم من يقول: بالقار، وكان ابواه مؤمنين، وكان كافرا، فخشينا ان يرهقهما طغيانا وكفرا، فيحملهما حبه على ان يتابعاه على دينه، فاردنا ان يبدلهما ربهما خيرا منه زكاة، واقرب رحما هما به ارحم منهما بالاول الذي قتله خضر، وزعم غير سعيد، انهما ابدلا جارية، واما داود بن ابي عاصم، فقال: عن غير واحد إنها جارية، وبلغني عن سعيد بن جبير انها جارية، ووجدته في كتاب ابي، عن يحيى بن معين، عن هشام بن يوسف، مثله .

حدثنا عبد الله، قال: حدثني محمد بن يعقوب ابو الهيثم الربالي ، حدثنا معتمر بن سليمان ، قال: سمعت ابي ، حدثنا رقبة ، عن ابي إسحاق ، عن سعيد بن جبير ، عن ابن عباس ، حدثنا ابي بن كعب ، قال: سمعت نبي الله صلى الله عليه وسلم، يقول: " بينما موسى في قومه يذكرهم بايام الله، وايام الله نعمه وبلاؤه، إذ قال: ما اعلم في الارض رجلا خيرا مني، او اعلم مني! قال: فاوحى الله إليه إني اعلم بالخير من هو او عند من هو، إن في الارض رجلا هو اعلم منك، قال: يا رب، فدلني عليه، فقيل له: تزود حوتا مالحا، ففعل، ثم خرج، فلقي الخضر، فكان من امرهما ما كان، حتى كان آخر ذلك مروا بالقرية اللئام اهلها، فطافا في المجالس، فاستطعما، فابوا ان يضيفوهما، ثم قص عليه النبا نبا السفينة، وانه إنما خرقها ليتجوزها الملك، فلا يريدها، واما الغلام، فطبع يوم طبع كافرا، كان ابواه عطفا عليه، فلو انه ادرك، ارهقهما طغيانا وكفرا، واما الجدار، فكان لغلامين يتيمين في المدينة" .
It is narrated from Hazrat Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) with reference to Ubayy bin Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him) that I heard the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: Once Hazrat Musa (peace be upon him) was standing and delivering a sermon before the Children of Israel. After the sermon ended, a man asked, "Who is the most knowledgeable among the people?" Hazrat Musa (peace be upon him) replied, "I am the most knowledgeable." Allah disliked that Musa did not attribute knowledge to Allah, so revelation was sent to Hazrat Musa (peace be upon him) that among My servants there is a servant who is more knowledgeable than you. Hazrat Musa (peace be upon him) said, "O Lord, how can I meet him?" He was commanded, "Take a (roasted) fish in a basket with you (and set out on your journey). Where the fish is lost, you will find that person." Hazrat Musa (peace be upon him) took a fish, placed it in the basket, and set out, and the incident occurred as Allah has described, until finally, after traveling, they reached a village. They asked the villagers for food, but they refused to host them. Then Hazrat Khidr (peace be upon him) explained to them the reality of the incident with the boat, saying that he damaged it because of the king, so that when he passed by, he would not seize it. As for the boy, he was naturally a disbeliever, and his parents were very affectionate towards him; if he had lived, he would have led them into rebellion and disobedience. As for the wall, it belonged to two orphan boys in the city.

حدثنا عبد الله، حدثنا ابو الربيع العتكي سليمان بن داود الزهراني ، حدثنا المعتمر بن سليمان ، قال: سمعت ابي يذكر، عن رقبة . ح وحدثنا عبد الله، قال: وحدثني محمد بن ابي بكر المقدمي ، حدثنا معتمر ، عن ابيه ، عن رقبة . ح وحدثنا عبد الله، قال: وحدثني سويد بن سعيد . ح وحدثنا عبد الله، قال وحدثني محمد بن احمد بن خالد الواسطي ، قالا: حدثنا معتمر ، عن ابيه ، عن رقبة ، وقالوا: جميعا، عن ابي إسحاق ، عن سعيد بن جبير ، عن ابن عباس ، عن ابي بن كعب ، عن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم: " الغلام الذي قتله الخضر طبع كافرا" زاد ابو الربيع في حديثه" ولو ادرك، لارهق ابويه طغيانا وكفرا" .
It is narrated from Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) with reference to Ubayy bin Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: The boy whom Khidr (peace be upon him) killed was naturally a disbeliever (if he had lived, he would have led his parents close to rebellion and disbelief).

حدثنا عبد الله، حدثنا سريج بن يونس ، وابو الربيع الزهراني ، قالا: حدثنا سلم بن قتيبة ، حدثنا عبد الجبار بن عباس الهمداني، عن ابي إسحاق ، عن سعيد بن جبير ، عن ابن عباس ، عن ابي بن كعب ، عن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم " الغلام الذي قتله صاحب موسى طبع يوم طبع كافرا" .
It is narrated from Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) with reference to Ubayy bin Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: The boy whom Khidr (peace be upon him) killed was naturally a disbeliever (if he had lived, he would have led his parents close to rebellion and disbelief).

حدثنا عبد الله، حدثنا محمد بن عبد الله بن نمير ، حدثنا ابو داود عمر بن سعد ، عن يحيى بن زكريا بن ابي زائدة ، عن حمزة ، عن ابي إسحاق ، عن سعيد بن جبير ، عن ابن عباس ، عن ابي ، ان رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم " قرا إن سالتك عن شيء بعدها فلا تصاحبني قد بلغت من لدني عذرا سورة الكهف آية 76" .
It is narrated from Hazrat Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) with reference to Ubayy bin Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) recited the word "balaghta" with tashdeed, that is, "ballaghta", in the verse "If I ask you about anything after this, then do not keep me in your company. حدثنا عبد الله، حدثنا حجاج بن يوسف الشاعر ، قال: حدثني وهب بن جرير ، انا سالته، حدثنا ابي ، قال: سمعت ايوب يحدث، عن سعيد بن جبير ، عن ابن عباس ، عن ابي بن كعب ، ان جبريل لما ركض زمزم بعقبه، جعلت ام إسماعيل تجمع البطحاء، فقال النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم: " رحم الله هاجر ام إسماعيل، لو تركتها لكانت ماء معينا" .
It is narrated from Hazrat Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) with reference to Ubayy bin Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him) that when Hazrat Jibreel (peace be upon him) struck his heel and caused the well of Zamzam to flow, the mother of Hazrat Ismail (peace be upon him) began gathering pebbles to make a boundary. The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "May Allah's mercy be upon Hajrah (peace be upon her), who was the mother of Hazrat Ismail (peace be upon him). If she had left it as it was, it would have become a flowing stream."

حدثنا يحيى بن آدم ، حدثنا حمزة بن حبيب الزيات ، عن ابي إسحاق ، عن سعيد بن جبير ، عن ابن عباس ، عن ابي بن كعب ، قال: كان رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم إذا دعا لاحد بدا بنفسه، فذكر ذات يوم موسى، فقال: " رحمة الله علينا وعلى موسى، لو كان صبر لقص الله تعالى علينا من خبره، ولكن قال: إن سالتك عن شيء بعدها فلا تصاحبني، قد بلغت من لدني عذرا" ..
It is narrated from Hazrat Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) with reference to Ubayy bin Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him) that when the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would supplicate for someone, he would begin with himself. Thus, one day while mentioning Hazrat Musa (peace be upon him), he said: "May Allah's mercy descend upon us and upon Musa (peace be upon him). If he had been patient, Allah the Exalted would have narrated further details of his story, but he said: 'If I ask you about anything after this, then do not keep me with you; you have received an excuse from me.'"

حدثنا حجاج ، وابو قطن عمرو بن الهيثم ، قالا: حدثنا حمزة ، عن ابي إسحاق ، عن سعيد بن جبير ، عن ابن عباس ، عن ابي بن كعب ، عن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم، معناه.
