Musnad of the Ansar
حَدِيثُ حَسَّانَ بْنِ ثَابِتٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ تَعَالَى عَنْهُ
Hadith of Hassan ibn Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him)
Hadith Number: 21936
حدثنا سفيان بن عيينة , عن الزهري , عن سعيد , قال: مر عمر رضي الله عنه بحسان وهو ينشد في المسجد , فلحظ إليه , قال: كنت انشد وفيه من هو خير منك , ثم التفت إلى ابي هريرة , فقال: سمعت رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم يقول: " اجب عني , اللهم ايده بروح القدس" , قال: نعم .
Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) once passed by Hazrat Hassan bin Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him), who was reciting poetry in the mosque. Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) glanced at him with the corner of his eye, so he said, "I used to recite poetry in this mosque at a time when one better than you was present here."

Hadith Number: 21937
حدثنا يعلى , حدثنا محمد بن عمرو , عن يحيى بن عبد الرحمن , قال: مر عمر رضي الله عنه , على حسان وهو ينشد الشعر في المسجد , فقال: في مسجد رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم تنشد الشعر؟ قال: " كنت انشد وفيه من هو خير منك , او كنت انشد فيه وفيه من هو خير منك" .
Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) once passed by Hazrat Hassan bin Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him), who was reciting poetry in the mosque. Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) glanced at him with the corner of his eye, so he said, "I used to recite poetry in this mosque at a time when one better than you was present here."

حكم دارالسلام: حديث صحيح، خ: 3212، م: 2485، وهذا إسناد منقطع، يحيى بن عبدالرحمن لم يشهد القصة
Hadith Number: 21938
حدثنا ابو كامل , حدثنا إبراهيم يعني ابن سعد , حدثنا ابن شهاب , عن سعيد بن المسيب , قال: مر عمر على حسان وهو ينشد في المسجد , فقال: مه , قال له حسان : " قد كنت انشد وفيه من هو خير منك" , قال: فانصرف عمر وهو يعرف انه يريد رسول الله صلي الله عليه وسلم .
Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) once passed by Hazrat Hassan bin Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him) who was reciting poetry in the mosque. Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) glanced at him with the corner of his eye, so he said, "I used to recite poetry in this mosque at a time when someone better than you was present here." Then Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) left from there because he understood that he was referring to the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him).

Hadith Number: 21939
حدثنا عبد الرزاق , اخبرنا معمر , عن الزهري , عن ابن المسيب , قال: انشد حسان بن ثابت وهو في المسجد , فمر عمر به فلحظه , فقال حسان : " والله لقد انشدت فيه من هو خير منك" , فخشي ان يرميه برسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم فجاز , وتركه .
Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) once passed by Hazrat Hassan bin Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him) who was reciting poetry in the mosque. Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) glanced at him with the corner of his eye, so he (Hassan) said, "I used to recite poetry in this mosque at a time when one better than you was present here." Upon this, Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) left him and moved on.
