What is reported about burying the deceased
Hadith Number: 545
Imam Malik (may Allah have mercy on him) was informed that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) passed away on Monday and was buried on Tuesday, and people prayed over him individually, with no one acting as their imam. Then some people said: He (peace and blessings be upon him) should be buried near the pulpit, and others said: In Baqi’. Then Sayyiduna Abu Bakr Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) came and said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say:“No prophet has been buried except at the place where he passed away.”Then a grave was dug at the place where he (peace and blessings be upon him) passed away. When the time for bathing came, people wanted to remove his (peace and blessings be upon him) shirt, but a voice was heard: Do not remove the shirt. So his (peace and blessings be upon him) shirt was not removed, and he was bathed while wearing his shirt.

It is narrated from Hazrat Urwah bin Zubair that there were two men who used to dig graves; one of them used to make a niche (lahr) in the grave and the other did not. The people said: Whoever comes first will start his work. So the one who made the niche came first, and thus the grave of the Prophet (peace be upon him) was made with a niche.

Imam Malik (may Allah have mercy on him) was informed that Lady Sayyida Umm Salama (may Allah be pleased with her) used to say: I was not certain of the passing of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) until I heard the sound of the pickaxe striking.

It is narrated from Yahya ibn Sa'id that Umm al-Mu'minin Sayyida Aisha Siddiqa (may Allah be pleased with her) said: I saw in a dream that three moons fell into my chamber, so I related this dream to Sayyiduna Abu Bakr Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him). When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) passed away, he had been buried in the chamber of Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her). Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: One of these three moons is you (peace and blessings be upon him), and he is the best among these three moons.

It is narrated from several reliable people that Sayyiduna Sa'd bin Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with him) and Sayyiduna Sa'id bin Zayd (may Allah be pleased with him) passed away in Aqiq (a locality near Madinah), and their funeral was brought to Madinah and they were buried there.

Hazrat Urwah bin Zubair said: I do not like to be buried in Baqi; if I am buried somewhere else, it is better, because in Baqi, wherever I am buried, it is possible that a sinful person has already been buried there, and I do not wish to be buried with him. And if a pious person has been buried there, then I do not want his bones to be disturbed for my sake.
