Imam Malik, may Allah have mercy on him, said: If the type of animal that is obligatory upon someone for Zakat is not available from his possession, for example, if a one-year-old she-camel is obligatory and it is not available, then a two-year-old camel should be taken. And if a two-year-old, three-year-old, or four-year-old she-camel is obligatory and it is not available, then he should buy and give it. And in my view, giving the price is not preferable.
