Comprehensive Chapter on Sa'i
Hadith Number: 829
Hazrat Urwah bin Zubair said: I asked Umm al-Mu’minin Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her): Look, Allah, Glorious and Exalted is He, says:“Indeed, Safa and Marwah are among the symbols of Allah, so whoever performs Hajj of the House or ‘Umrah, there is no sin upon him in walking between them.”From this it seems that if one does not perform Sa’i, there is no harm. Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) replied: Never so! If it were as you think (i.e., that not performing Sa’i would not be wrong), then Allah, Glorious and Exalted is He, would have said: There is sin upon him in not performing Sa’i between Safa and Marwah. And this verse was revealed regarding the Ansar; they used to perform Hajj for Manat (Manat is the name of an idol which the Arabs used to worship before Islam), and Manat was opposite Qudayd (Qudayd is the name of a village between Makkah and Madinah, and Manat was in front of it). They used to consider it wrong to perform Sa’i between Safa and Marwah. When they embraced Islam, they asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) about this, so at that time Allah, Glorious is His Majesty, revealed:“Safa and Marwah are both among the symbols of Allah, so whoever performs Hajj of the House or ‘Umrah, there is no sin upon him in walking between them.”

It is narrated from Hisham bin Urwah that Sawdah, the daughter of Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them), was married to Urwah bin Zubair. One day she went out to perform Sa'i between Safa and Marwah, on foot, during Hajj or Umrah, and she was a stout woman. She went to perform Sa'i when people had finished the Isha prayer, and her Sa'i was not yet complete when the call to prayer for Fajr was given. Then she completed her Sa'i in that interval. And whenever Urwah saw people performing Sa'i while riding, he would strictly forbid them. Those people would make the excuse of illness out of shyness from Urwah. So Urwah would say among his people: These people have suffered loss, they did not attain the objective.

Imam Malik, may Allah have mercy on him, said that if a person forgets to perform Sa'i between Safa and Marwah during Umrah, and does not remember until he has gone far from Makkah, then he should return and perform Sa'i. And if he has had intercourse with a woman, then he should return, perform Sa'i, then perform another Umrah and offer a sacrifice.

Imam Malik, may Allah have mercy on him, was asked about a person who, while performing Sa'i, stands and starts talking to someone; what is the ruling on this? He replied: I do not like this.

Imam Malik, may Allah have mercy on him, said: If a person forgets a circuit during Tawaf, or he becomes doubtful about it, and then remembers it while performing Sa’i, he should stop the Sa’i and first complete the Tawaf, and perform the two units of prayer for Tawaf, then start the Sa’i from the beginning.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) that when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) would come to Safa and Marwah, he would walk at a normal pace, but when his feet entered the valley, he would walk quickly until he had crossed the valley.

Imam Malik, may Allah have mercy on him, said that if a person, out of ignorance, performed sa'i before tawaf, then he should return and perform tawaf, then repeat the sa'i. And if he has left Makkah and gone far away, even then he should return, perform tawaf, and then perform sa'i. If he has had intercourse with a woman, then he should return, perform tawaf and sa'i, then perform another 'umrah and offer a sacrifice.
