It is narrated from Hazrat Urwah bin Zubair that the messenger of Allah (peace be upon him)'s envoy who was taking the sacrificial animal (hadi) asked him: O Messenger of Allah! What should I do if the sacrificial animal is about to die on the way? The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "If the sacrificial camel is about to die, slaughter it, and dip the collar that was around its neck in its blood, then leave it so that people may eat it."

Saeed bin Musayyib said: If a person takes a sacrificial camel for Hadi, and then it is about to perish, and he slaughters it and leaves it so that people may eat from it, then there is no blame on him. However, if he himself eats from it or orders someone to eat from it, then compensation will be obligatory.

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said the same.

Ibn Shihab said: Whoever takes a camel for jazā’, or for a vow, or for tamattu’, and then it is destroyed on the way, then its compensation is obligatory upon him.

It is narrated from Afa’ that Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) said: Whoever takes a camel for Hadi, then it dies on the way or gets lost, if it was for a vow, he should give its substitute, and if it was voluntary, then he may give a substitute if he wishes or not.

Imam Malik, may Allah have mercy on him, said: I heard from the people of knowledge, they used to say: The owner of the sacrificial animal should not eat from that sacrificial animal which is offered as a penalty for a crime or as a ransom.
