It is narrated from Hazrat Zainab bint Ka'b bin Ujrah that Sayyida Fari'ah bint Malik bin Sinan (may Allah be pleased with her), who is the sister of Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him), came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and asked, "May I have permission to go to my people? Because some slaves of my husband had run away, he went out to search for them. When he reached Qudum (a place seven miles from Madinah), he found the slaves there, and the slaves killed my husband. My husband has not left for me any personal house nor any maintenance. If you permit, I will go to my family." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Go." When I turned to leave, I had not yet reached outside the chamber when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) called me back, or someone else called me at his command, and asked me. I narrated the whole incident. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Stay in this house until your waiting period ('iddah) is complete." So I observed my 'iddah in that house for four months and ten days. When Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) became the Caliph, he sent someone to ask me about this matter, and he gave a ruling in accordance with it.

It is narrated from Sa'id bin al-Musayyib that Sayyiduna Umar bin Khattab, may Allah be pleased with him, used to turn back those women who were in their waiting period ('iddah) after the death of their husbands from Baida, and would not allow them to go for Hajj.

Yahya ibn Sa'id was informed that Sa'ib ibn Khabbab had passed away, so his wife came to Abdullah ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) and informed him of her husband's death, and said that she had some farmland. She asked if he would permit her to stay there at night. He forbade her from doing so, so she would leave Medina in the morning, spend the whole day at her farmland, work there all day, and then return to Medina in the evening and spend the night in her house.

It is narrated from Hisham bin Urwah, his father Urwah used to say that if someone among the people who live in the wilderness loses her husband (he dies), then she should stay with her people; wherever they settle, she should also settle there (due to necessity).

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) used to say that a woman whose husband dies, or divorces her, should stay in her house at night (during the waiting period).
