It is narrated from Umm al-Mu'minin Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "What becomes unlawful due to suckling is also unlawful due to lineage."

It is narrated from Sayyidah Judamah bint Wahb (may Allah be pleased with her) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I had intended to prohibit intercourse until the woman finishes nursing her child, but then I learned that the people of Rome and Persia do so, and it does not harm their children."

Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) said: At first, it was revealed in the Noble Qur'an that prohibition is established by ten sucklings, then it was abrogated and five sucklings were fixed. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) passed away and people were reciting this as Qur'an.

Imam Malik (may Allah have mercy on him) said that this hadith is not acted upon. Rather, prohibition is established by both a small and a large number of sucklings.
