What is Reported Regarding Backbiting
Hadith Number: 1814
حدثني مالك، عن الوليد بن عبد الله بن صياد ، ان المطلب بن عبد الله بن حنطب المخزومي اخبره، ان رجلا سال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم ما الغيبة؟ فقال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم: " ان تذكر من المرء ما يكره ان يسمع"، قال: يا رسول الله، وإن كان حقا؟ قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم:" إذا قلت باطلا فذلك البهتان"
It is narrated from Matlub bin Abdullah bin Hantab Makhzumi that a man asked the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him: What is backbiting? He, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "To mention something about someone which, if he hears it, he would dislike." He said: O Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him! Even if it is true? He, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "If it is a lie, then it is slander."
