(109) بَابُ إِيجَابِ إِحْدَاثِ النِّيَّةِ لِلْوُضُوءِ وَالْغُسْلِ
Chapter 109: Obligation of forming intention for ablution and bathing
Hadith Number: 142
نا يحيى بن حبيب الحارثي ، واحمد بن عبدة الضبي ، قالا: حدثنا حماد بن زيد ، عن يحيى بن سعيد ، عن محمد بن إبراهيم ، عن علقمة بن وقاص الليثي ، قال: سمعت عمر بن الخطاب ، يقول: سمعت رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم يقول:" إنما الاعمال بالنية، وإنما لامرئ ما نوى، فمن كانت هجرته إلى الله وإلى رسوله، فهجرته إلى الله وإلى رسوله، ومن كانت هجرته إلى دنيا يصيبها او امراة يتزوجها، فهجرته إلى ما هاجر إليه" . لم يقل احمد: وإنما لامرئ ما نوى
Sayyiduna Umar bin Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "The acceptance of deeds depends upon the intention, and for every person is what he intended. (That is, reward or punishment will be according to good or bad intention.) So whoever's migration was for Allah and His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him), then his migration is for Allah and His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him). And whoever's migration was for worldly gain or to marry a woman, then his migration is towards that for which he migrated. In Ahmad's narration, these words are not present. «وانما لامري ما نوي» 'For a man is only that which he intended.'"

Hadith Number: 143
نا محمد بن الوليد ، نا عبد الوهاب يعني ابن عبد المجيد الثقفي ، قال: سمعت يحيى بن سعيد ، يقول: اخبرني محمد بن إبراهيم ، انه سمع علقمة بن وقاص الليثي ، يقول: سمعت عمر بن الخطاب ، يقول: سمعت رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم، يقول: " الاعمال بالنية، وإنما لامرئ ما نوى"
Sayyiduna Umar bin Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) say: "Actions are (judged) according to intentions. And for every person is what he intended."
