Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates from a man of his people, Sayyiduna Malik bin Sa’sa’ah (may Allah be pleased with him), that the Prophet of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:“While I was in a state between sleep and wakefulness near the House (Ka’bah), I heard someone say, ‘Take the one from the middle of the three.’ Then a golden basin was brought to me in which there was Zamzam water.”The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:“My chest was opened from here to here.”Qatadah says: I asked,“What does he mean by that?”He said:“It means that the chest of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was split up to the lower part of the belly, then my heart was taken out, washed with Zamzam water, and then returned to its place. Then it was filled with faith and wisdom. Then a white animal, bigger than a donkey and smaller than a mule, was brought to me, which is called Buraq. I was mounted upon it, and then I set off until we reached the lowest heaven. Jibreel (peace be upon him) asked for the door to be opened. It was said, ‘Who is it?’ He replied, ‘Jibreel.’ It was asked, ‘Who is with you?’ He replied, ‘Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him).’ It was asked, ‘Has he been called?’ Jibreel (peace be upon him) replied, ‘Yes.’ So the door was opened for us. (The angels) said, ‘Welcome, may your arrival be blessed.’ Then I came to Adam (peace be upon him), so I asked, ‘O Jibreel, who is this?’ He replied, ‘This is your noble father Adam (peace be upon him).’ I greeted him with salam, and he said, ‘Welcome to the righteous son and the righteous Prophet.’ He said: Then we continued until we reached the second heaven. Jibreel (peace be upon him) asked for the door to be opened. It was said, ‘Who is it?’ He replied, ‘Jibreel.’ It was asked, ‘Who is with you?’ He replied, ‘(Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him).’ It was asked, ‘Has he been called?’ He said, ‘Yes.’ So the door was opened for us. (The angels) said, ‘Welcome, may your arrival be blessed.’ Then I went to Yahya and ‘Isa (peace be upon them). I said, ‘O Jibreel, who are these two gentlemen?’ He replied, ‘Yahya and ‘Isa (peace be upon them).’ Sa’eed says: I think he said in his narration, ‘Two maternal cousins.’ So I greeted both of them with salam, and they said, ‘Welcome to the righteous brother and the noble Prophet.’ The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:“Then we continued until we reached the third heaven. Jibreel (peace be upon him) asked for the door to be opened. It was said, ‘Who is it?’ He replied, ‘Jibreel.’ It was asked, ‘Who is with you?’ He said, ‘Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him).’ It was asked, ‘Has he been called?’ He said, ‘Yes.’ So the door was opened for us, and the angels said, ‘Welcome, welcome.’ The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:“Then I came to Yusuf (peace be upon him), and I greeted him with salam. He said, ‘Welcome to the righteous Prophet and the righteous brother.’ Then we proceeded to the fourth heaven, and there too Jibreel and the keepers had a conversation similar to the previous one. Then I came to Idris (peace be upon him), and I greeted him with salam. He said, ‘Welcome to the righteous brother and the noble Prophet.’ Then we reached the fifth heaven, and I came to Harun (peace be upon him) and greeted him with salam. He said, ‘Welcome to the blessed brother and the righteous Prophet.’ Then we proceeded to the sixth heaven. Then I came to Musa (peace be upon him)—may Allah’s mercy be upon them all. I greeted him with salam, and he said, ‘Welcome to the righteous brother and the righteous Prophet.’ Then when I moved on, he began to weep and said, then I returned towards Sidrat al-Muntaha.”The Prophet of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:“The fruits of this (lote) tree are like the water jars of Hajar (a town), and its leaves are as large as the ears of elephants.”And the Prophet of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:“You saw four rivers flowing from the roots of Sidrah. Two rivers were visible and two were hidden. So I asked, ‘O Jibreel, what are these rivers?’ He replied, ‘These two hidden (covered) rivers have gone into Paradise, and these two visible rivers are the Nile and the Euphrates.’ Then al-Bayt al-Ma’mur was raised for us. I said, ‘O Jibreel, what is this?’ He replied, ‘This is al-Bayt al-Ma’mur. Every day seventy thousand angels enter it, and when they leave, they never return to it again.’ The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Two vessels were brought to me, one containing wine and the other milk. Both vessels were presented to me, and I chose the milk. It was said to me, ‘You have chosen correctly. Allah has guided you to the thing of goodness and virtue. Your Ummah will also follow you in this.’ Then fifty prayers were made obligatory upon me every day. I took them and came to Musa (peace be upon him). He asked, ‘What have you been commanded?’ I said, ‘I have been commanded to perform fifty prayers every day.’ He said, ‘Indeed, your Ummah will not be able to bear this. I have tested the Children of Israel before you and have examined them thoroughly (and tried my best to reform them). Go back to your Lord and ask for a reduction for your Ummah.’ I went back (and asked for a reduction), and five prayers were reduced for me. Then I kept going back and forth between my Lord and Musa (peace be upon him), and Allah kept granting me reductions, and Musa (peace be upon him) kept telling me to ask for more reduction, until I returned with the command of five prayers every day. He said, ‘Indeed, your Ummah will not be able to bear this. I have tested the Children of Israel before you and have put them through a very hard trial. Go back to your Lord and ask for a reduction for your Ummah.’ The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:“I have gone back to my Lord so many times that I feel shy. Therefore, I am now content and accept (this command).”Then I was called out: ‘Indeed, I have established My obligation and have reduced it for My servants, and I have made the reward of every good deed tenfold.’

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) that Sayyiduna Malik bin Sa’sa’ah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated to him a hadith that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) informed him about the night of Isra, then he mentioned the complete hadith. Qatadah (may Allah have mercy on him) says that I asked Jarud (may Allah have mercy on him) while he was sitting beside me,“What is meant by the statement of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) (that my chest was opened from here to here)?”He replied,“(It means that) the chest of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was opened from his collarbone to the (pubic) hair below the navel.”And I also heard him say that it was opened from the chest hair of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) to the (pubic) hair below the navel. Then Muhammad bin Yahya narrated the complete hadith. Imam Abu Bakr (may Allah have mercy on him) says that the wording of this hadith indicates that in the narration of Sa’id, the statement of Qatadah (may Allah have mercy on him): «‏‏‏‏فقلت له» ‏‏‏‏“I said to him,”does not mean that he said it to Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him), but rather what he meant is that he said it to Jarud.
