Hazrat Amr bin Dinar and Abu Zubair narrate that we heard from Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him), (one of the narrators reports more words than his companion): Sayyiduna Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him) used to perform (Isha) prayer with the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), then would return and lead his people in prayer. And one night, the Noble Prophet (peace be upon him) performed the prayer late, so Sayyiduna Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him) went back and led them in prayer and recited «‏‏‏‏سورة البقرة» ‏‏‏‏. When one of the people saw him reciting «‏‏‏‏سورة البقرة» ‏‏‏‏, he went to a corner of the mosque and performed the prayer alone. The people said to him, "Have you become a hypocrite?" He replied, "No." He said, "I will surely go to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) and inform him of this incident." He went to the Noble Prophet (peace be upon him) and said, "Sayyiduna Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him) performs (Isha) prayer with you, then returns and leads us in prayer. Last night, you performed the prayer late, so (after praying with you) he came and led us in prayer and recited «‏‏‏‏سورة البقرة» ‏‏‏‏. O Messenger of Allah, I stepped back from him and performed the prayer alone, and indeed we work with our hands (so we cannot stand long at night)." The Noble Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "O Mu'adh, are you a cause of tribulation? Recite Surah «‏‏‏‏وَاللَّيْلِ إِذَا يَغْشَىٰ» ‏‏‏‏ [ سورة الليل ] , and «‏‏‏‏سَبِّحِ اسْمَ رَبِّكَ الْأَعْلَى» ‏‏‏‏ [ سورة الأعلى ] , and «‏‏‏‏وَالسَّمَاءِ ذَاتِ الْبُرُوجِ» ‏‏‏‏ [ سورة البروج ] ." Imam Abu Bakr (may Allah have mercy on him) says that I have mentioned other chains of this hadith in the Book of Imamate.

Hazrat Adi bin Thabit narrates that I heard Bara bin Azib (may Allah be pleased with him) say that I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) reciting Surah «‏‏‏‏وَالتِّينِ وَالزَّيْتُونِ» ‏‏‏‏ [ سورة التين ] in the Isha prayer. I have not heard anyone with a more beautiful recitation than him.

The noble wife of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), Sayyidah Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her), narrates that I became ill (during Hajj), so I informed the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him). He said: "Perform Tawaf riding on a mount behind the people." She says that I performed Tawaf while riding a camel. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) was facing the Ka'bah and offering prayer, so I heard him reciting Surah «‏‏‏‏وَالطُّورِ،‏ وَكِتَابٍ مَّسْطُورٍ» ‏‏‏‏ [ سورة الطور ] in the 'Isha prayer while leading the people in prayer. Ibn Lahi'ah says that Abu Al-Aswad states, whenever the Prophet (peace be upon him) recited (the Qur'an), he would recite it slowly and distinctly. Malik has narrated these words: that the Prophet (peace be upon him) was offering prayer beside the House of Allah.
