Sayyiduna ‘Adi bin Hatim (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that when this verse «‏‏‏‏وَكُلُوا وَاشْرَبُوا حَتَّىٰ يَتَبَيَّنَ لَكُمُ الْخَيْطُ الْأَبْيَضُ مِنَ الْخَيْطِ الْأَسْوَدِ» ‏‏‏‏ [ سورة البقرة: 187 ] “And eat and drink until the white thread of dawn becomes distinct to you from the black thread,”was revealed, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:“Indeed, it is the distinction of the whiteness of the day from the darkness of the night.”

Sayyiduna ‘Adi bin Hatim (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that I asked,“O Messenger of Allah, what is meant by the black thread and the white thread? Are these two threads?”He (peace be upon him) said:“Indeed, you are broad-necked.”Tell me, have you ever seen two threads? Then he said:“No, rather what is meant is the darkness of the night and the whiteness of the day.”
