139 Subchapter: Warning against giving away all one’s wealth in charity
Hadith Number: Q2441
And the evidence that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, intended by his saying: "from surplus wealth" that which suffices him and those whom he supports, not from the abundance of a man.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both) that a man came to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) with a golden egg which he had found in a mine. In the narration of Janab al-Duraqi, it is stated that he came with a piece of gold the size of an egg which he had found in a mine. He said, "O Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), please accept this gold from me as charity. By Allah, I do not own anything else besides this." The Prophet (peace be upon him) turned away from him. Then he came to your right side and spoke as before. The Prophet (peace be upon him) again turned his face away from him. Then he came to your left side and made the same request, and again you turned your face away from him. Then, upon his fourth request, the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "Bring it." You took it and threw it forcefully; if it had struck his head, his head would have split, and if it had struck his leg, it would have been injured. Then you said: "One of you comes with all his wealth to give in charity, and then goes around spreading his hands before people. Indeed, charity is that which leaves wealth behind." This narration is from Janab Ibn Rafi'. In the narration of Janab al-Duraqi, there is this addition: "Take your wealth back; we have no need of it."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ka'b bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) that when his repentance was accepted, he submitted to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him): "O Messenger of Allah, all my wealth is charity for Allah and His Messenger; I am giving it up." So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) instructed him: "Keep some of your wealth, that will be better for you."
