Sahih Ibn Khuzaymah
جماع أَبْوَابِ ذِكْرِ أَفْعَالٍ اخْتَلَفَ النَّاسُ فِي إِبَاحَتِهِ لِلْمُحْرِمِ، نَصَّتْ سُنَّةُ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَوْ دَلَّتْ عَلَى إِبَاحَتِهَا
Chapters on Acts Permitted for the Pilgrim by Sunnah
(284) بَابُ الْتِقَاطِ الْحَصَى لِرَمْيِ الْجِمَارِ مِنَ الْمُزْدَلِفَةِ،
Chapter: Collecting pebbles for stoning the pillars from Muzdalifah

والبيان ان كسر الحجارة لحصى الجمار بدعة، لما فيه من إيذاء الناس وإتعاب ابدان من يتكلف كسر الحجارة توهما انه سنة.
And the explanation that breaking stones to make pebbles is an innovation, because the one who breaks stones considering it a Sunnah causes hardship to people and tires himself.

Hadith Number: 2867
حدثنا محمد بن بشار ، حدثنا ابن ابي عدي ، ومحمد بن جعفر ، وعبد الوهاب بن عبد المجيد ، عن عوف بن ابي جميلة ، عن زياد بن حصين ، حدثنا ابو العالية ، قال: قال لي ابن عباس ، قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم غداة العقبة قال ابن ابي عدي في حديثه، وهكذا قال عوف: " هات القط حصيات هي حصى الخذف"، فلما وضعن في يده، قال:" بامثال هؤلاء، بامثال هؤلاء، وإياكم والغلو في الدين، فإنما هلك من كان قبلكم بالغلو في الدين"
Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered me on the morning of Aqabah (10th of Dhul-Hijjah): "Come, pick up pebbles for me, small ones (which can be thrown between two fingers)." When I placed them in his blessed hand, he said: "Take pebbles of this kind, just pick such pebbles. Beware, avoid exaggeration in religious matters, for those before you were destroyed because of exaggeration in religion."

حدثنا به بندار مرة اخرى بمثل هذا اللفظ، غير انه قال: حدثني زياد بن حصين، وثنا بندار، حدثنا يحيى بن سعيد ، حدثنا عوف ، حدثنا زياد بن حصين ، حدثني ابو العالية ، قال: قال لي ابن عباس : قال عوف: لا ادري الفضل، او عبد الله بن عباس قال: قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم غداة العقبة: " القط لي حصيات" ، بمثله سواء
Abu Al-Aliyah says that Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrated to me. Awf says that I do not know whether Fadl or Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered me on the morning of Aqabah, "Pick up pebbles for me," and a narration similar to the above was narrated.
