The purified wife of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), Sayyidah Aisha Siddiqa (may Allah be pleased with her), said that people used to come to offer the Friday prayer from their homes and from the surrounding villages of Madinah (to Masjid Nabawi) in turns. People would come walking through dust, covered in dust and drenched in sweat, to such an extent that the sweating would not stop. In this condition, a man came to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) while he was with me. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, "It would be better if you people performed ghusl (ritual bath) on this day (Friday)."

Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) used to say that people would remain busy with their work and would come for Jumu'ah in that same (dirty) state, so it was said to them that if only you people would (sometimes) perform ghusl.
