Chapters on the Punishment for Theft
بابُ لَعْنِ السَّارِقِ وَفِي كَمْ تُقْطَعُ يَدُهُ
Chapter: Cursing the Thief and Regarding the Amount for Cutting the Hand
Hadith Number: 6752
عن ابي هريرة رضي الله عنه قال قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم لعن الله السارق يسرق البيضة فتقطع يده ويسرق الحبل فتقطع يده
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah, may Allah be pleased with him, that the Noble Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: May Allah curse the thief; he steals an egg and his hand is cut off, he steals a rope and his hand is cut off.

عن يحيى بن يحيى الغساني قال قدمت المدينة فلقيت ابا بكر بن محمد بن عمرو بن حزم وهو عامل على المدينة قال اتيت بسارق فارسلت إلي خالتي عمرة بنت عبد الرحمن رضي الله عنها ان لا تعجل في امر هذا الرجل حتى آتيك فاخبرك ما سمعت من عائشة رضي الله عنها في امر السارق قال فاتتني واخبرتني انها سمعت عائشة رضي الله عنها تقول قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم اقطعوا في ربع الدينار ولا تقطعوا فيما هو ادنى من ذلك وكان ربع الدينار يومئذ ثلاثة دراهم فالدينار اثنا عشر درهما قال وكانت سرقته دون ربع الدينار فلم اقطعه
Yahya bin Yahya Ghassani says: I came to Madinah and met the governor of Madinah, Abu Bakr bin Muhammad. He said: A thief was brought to me, and my aunt, Umrah bint Abd al-Rahman, sent me a message saying: Do not make a hasty decision about this man; let me come to you so that I can tell you the hadith I heard from Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) regarding the thief. So she came to me and informed me that she had heard from Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) about the thief. She said that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Cut off the thief’s hand for a quarter of a dinar; do not cut it off for less than that. In those days, a quarter of a dinar was equal to three dirhams, so a dinar was twelve dirhams. The theft of this thief was less than a quarter of a dinar, so I did not cut off his hand.

Hadith Number: 6754
عن عائشة رضي الله عنها ان النبي صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم قال تقطع يد السارق وفي لفظ لا تقطع يد السارق إلا في ربع دينار فصاعدا
It is narrated from Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: The hand of a thief shall not be cut off except for a quarter of a dinar or more.

Hadith Number: 6755
عن ابن عمر رضي الله عنهما عن النبي صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم انه قطع يد رجل سرق ترسا من صفة النساء ثمنه ثلاثة دراهم
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had the hand of a man cut off; he had stolen a shield from the women's platform, its value was three dirhams.

Hadith Number: 6756
عن عامر بن سعد عن ابيه رضي الله عنه ان النبي صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم قال تقطع اليد في ثمن المجن
Narrated by Sayyiduna Sa’d bin Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: The hand will be cut off for theft equal to the price of a shield.

Hadith Number: 6757
عن عمرو بن شعيب عن ابيه عن جده رضي الله عنه ان قيمة المجن كانت على عهد رسول الله صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم عشرة دراهم
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr bin al-As (may Allah be pleased with them both) that in the time of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family), the price of a shield was ten dirhams.

Hadith Number: 6758
عن عمرو بن شعيب عن ابيه عن جده رضي الله عنه قال قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم لا قطع فيما دون عشرة دراهم
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr bin Aas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: The hand is not to be cut off for less than ten dirhams.
