It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Umayyah Makhzumi (may Allah be pleased with him) that a thief was brought to the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). He confessed to the theft, but the stolen goods were not found with him. The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: I think you have not committed the theft. He replied: Why not, I did commit the theft. This was said two or three times in the same manner. Then the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Cut off his hand and then bring him to me. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: Say: (I seek forgiveness from Allah and turn to Him in repentance). Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: O Allah! Accept his repentance.
