It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did not prescribe a fixed punishment for drinking alcohol. Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) says that a man drank alcohol and was so intoxicated that he was staggering in a street. He was brought to the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). When he reached near the house of Sayyiduna Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him), he slipped from their hands and entered the house of Sayyiduna Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) and clung to him from behind. When people mentioned this to the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), he laughed and said: Did he really do that? Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did not give any order regarding him.

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him) recited Surah Yusuf in Homs. A man said:“It was not revealed in this way.”When Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) approached him, he smelled alcohol from him. Then he said to him:“Do you deny the truth and drink this filthy thing? I will not leave you without enforcing the prescribed punishment.”Then he enforced the punishment on him and said:“By Allah! The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) taught me this Surah in exactly this way.”
