Sayyiduna Ali bin Abu Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade me—I do not say that he forbade you—he (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade me from wearing a gold ring, from silk clothing, from dyed (with safflower) clothing, and from reciting the Qur’an while in the state of bowing (ruku’). Then the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gave me a striped silk garment. When I went out wearing it, he (peace and blessings be upon him) said:“O Ali! I did not give it to you to wear.”I went to Lady Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) and tore the garment into two pieces. Lady Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) said:“O son of Abu Talib! What have you done?”I said:“The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade me from wearing it. You wear it, and let other women wear it as well.”
