The example of a believer who does not recite the Qur'an is like that of a date; its taste is good, but it has no fragrance. The example of a wicked person who recites the Qur'an is like that of basil; its taste is bitter, but its fragrance is good. And the example of a wicked person who does not recite the Qur'an is like that of colocynth; its taste is bitter and it has no fragrance.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him), he says: Once we were reciting the Holy Qur'an, among us were Arabs, non-Arabs, those of black complexion, and those of white complexion. Suddenly, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came to us and said: You are upon goodness, you are reciting the Book of Allah, while the Messenger of Allah is among you. Soon a time will come when people will exaggerate in reciting this Book beautifully, just as an arrow is straightened with great attention, but they will hasten to receive its reward (in this world) and will not defer it until the Hereafter.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) entered the mosque while some people were reciting the Holy Qur’an in the mosque. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Recite the Noble Qur’an. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) listened attentively and then said: Recite, recite, each one is good, but through it seek Allah Almighty. Before such people come who will recite it precisely as an arrow is straightened, but will seek its reward in this world and will not defer its reward till the Hereafter.
