Sayyidah Umm ‘Atiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her) says: When this verse was revealed: {یٰٓاَیُّہَا النَّبِیُّ اِذَا جَآءَ کَ الْمُؤْمِنٰتُ یُبَایِعْنَکَ عَلٰٓی اَنْ لَّا یُشْرِکْنَ بِاللّٰہِ شَیْئًا وَّلَا یَسْرِقْنَ وَلَا یَزْنِیْنَ وَلَا یَقْتُلْنَ اَوْلَادَھُنَّ وَلَا یَاْتِیْنَ بِبُھْتَانٍ یَّفْتَرِیْنَہٗ بَیْنَ اَیْدِیْھِنَّ وَاَرْجُلِھِنَّ وَلَا یَعْصِیْنَکَ فِیْ مَعْرُوْفٍ} (Surah Al-Mumtahanah: 12), that is: O Prophet! When believing women come to you to pledge that they will not associate anything with Allah, will not steal, will not commit adultery, will not kill their children, will not bring a false charge, and will not disobey you in what is right—among the things you forbade was wailing (over the dead). I said: O Messenger of Allah! Such-and-such family supported me in wailing during the time of ignorance. Now it is necessary for me to support them. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: (Alright) except for such-and-such family.

It is narrated from Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to test the faith of believing women through this verse: {یٰٓاَیُّھَا النَّبِیُّ اِذَا جَآءَ کَ الْمُؤْمِنٰتُ یُبَایِعْنَکَ عَلٰٓی اَنْ لَّا یُشْرِکْنَ بِاللّٰہِ شَیْئًا وَّلَا یَسْرِقْنَ وَلَا یَزْنِیْنَ وَلَا یَقْتُلْنَ اَوْلَادَھُنَّ وَلَا یَاْتِیْنَ بِبُھْتَانٍ یَّفْتَرِیْنَہٗ بَیْنَ اَیْدِیْھِنَّ وَاَرْجُلِھِنَّ وَلَا یَعْصِیْنَکَ فِیْ مَعْرُوْفٍ} (Surah Al-Mumtahina: 12) That is: O Prophet! When believing women come to you, they should pledge that they will not associate anything with Allah, will not steal, will not commit adultery, will not kill their children, will not slander anyone, and will not disobey you in any good matter. And they will not do this, and they will not do that.
