His (Allah's) saying: {O you who have believed, do not approach prayer while you are intoxicated until you know what you are saying, nor in a state of janabah except those passing through [a place of prayer], until you have washed [your whole body]. And if you are ill or on a journey or one of you comes from the place of relieving himself or you have contacted women and do not find water, then seek clean earth and wipe over your faces and your hands [with it]. Indeed, Allah is ever Pardoning and Forgiving}

Qatadah (may Allah have mercy on him) said: We asked Sa'id bin Jubair (may Allah have mercy on him) about the statement of Allah, the Exalted: ﴿وَإِنْ كُنْتُمْ مَرْضَىٰ أَوْ عَلَىٰ سَفَرٍ﴾ — what concession is there for the sick in this? He replied: If someone has boils, wounds, or finds it difficult to use water, then he should perform tayammum with clean earth.

Saeed bin Jubair (may Allah have mercy on him) said: We were in the chamber of Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both), with us were Ata bin Abi Rabah, some mawali, Ubaid bin Umair, and a few Arabs. So we discussed the meaning of "lamas" (touch). I and Ata said that "lamas" means touching with the hand, while Ubaid bin Umair and the Arabs said that it means intercourse. I said: The matter of virtue in this issue is close to you. Then I went to Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both), he was sitting on a couch. He asked: "What happened?" I said: We were discussing about "lamas", some said it is touching with the hand, and some said it is intercourse. He asked: "Who said it is intercourse?" I said: The Arabs. Then he asked: "And who said it is touching with the hand?" I said: The mawali. So he asked: "Which group were you with?" I said: With the mawali. So he laughed and said three times: "The mawali have prevailed, the mawali have prevailed." Then he said: Lamas, mas, and mubasharat, all of them ultimately mean intercourse, but Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, uses whatever expression He wills for whatever meaning He wills.

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: Touching (lams), contact (mas), and intimacy (mubasharat) are all stages leading up to intercourse, but Allah the Exalted has chosen to use indirect language for this.

Ibrahim (may Allah have mercy on him) used to recite: "aw lamastumu an-nisaa" and would say: What is meant by this is a relationship less than intercourse.

Muhammad bin Sirin (may Allah have mercy on him) said: I asked Ubaidah (may Allah have mercy on him) about the statement of Allah, the Exalted: ﴿أَوْ لَامَسْتُمُ النِّسَاءَ﴾, so he replied with a gesture of his hand, and I understood by myself what he meant.

Muhammad bin Sirin (may Allah have mercy on him) said: I was informed about Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that when he touched his private part, he would perform ablution, so I thought that the statement of Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) and 'Ubaidah (may Allah have mercy on him) is the same.
