Book of Tafsir (Quranic Exegesis)
His (Allah's) saying: {It will not be in accordance with your desires or those of the People of the Book. Whoever does wrong will be recompensed for it, and he will not find besides Allah a protector or a helper. And whoever does righteous deeds, whether male or female, while being a believer—those will enter Paradise and will not be wronged, [even as much as] the speck on a date seed}

Mujahid (may Allah have mercy on him) said: The Arabs used to say that we will not be resurrected again, nor will we be held accountable, and the Christians used to say that the Fire will only touch us for a few numbered days. So Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, revealed this verse: ﴿لَيْسَ بِأَمَانِيِّكُمْ وَلَا أَمَانِيِّ أَهْلِ الْكِتَابِ مَنْ يَعْمَلْ سُوءًا يُجْزَ بِهِ﴾ meaning: It is not according to your wishes nor the wishes of the People of the Book; whoever does evil will be recompensed for it.

Masruq (may Allah have mercy on him) said regarding this verse:“It is not by your wishes nor the wishes of the People of the Book”that there was an argument between the Muslims and the People of the Book. The Muslims said: We are more rightly guided than you. So Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, revealed this verse, and then made the Muslims prevail with these words:“And whoever does righteous deeds, whether male or female, while being a believer...”until the end of the verse.

Sayyiduna Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) said: When this verse was revealed: "Whoever does evil will be recompensed for it" (__QUR_N__), it was very hard on the Muslims. So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to them: Remain close and adopt moderation, for whatever befalls a Muslim becomes an expiation for him, even the thorn that pricks him and the stumble that he takes.

When Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) heard the verse: "Whoever does evil will be recompensed for it," he said: "Then after this, how can there be any good?" So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "May Allah have mercy on you, O Abu Bakr! Do you not fall ill? Do you not experience hardships?" He said: "Yes." So he (the Prophet) said: "That is the recompense for those sins."

Sayyiduna Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) regarding the verse:“It is not by your wishes nor the wishes of the People of the Book. Whoever does evil will be recompensed for it”said: I asked,“O Messenger of Allah! After this, how is goodness and reform possible?”So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:“O Abu Bakr! Do you not become worried? Do you not become saddened? Do you not experience hardship?”I said,“Why not, O Messenger of Allah!”He said:“That is its recompense.”

Sayyiduna Abu Bakr Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) said: After this verse, ﴿Whoever does evil will be recompensed for it﴾, how is reform possible? So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: O Abu Bakr! Do you not fall ill? Do you not experience hardship? He replied: Why not. So he said: These are also among those things for which you are recompensed.

Hasan (may Allah have mercy on him) said regarding the statement of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic:“Whoever does evil will be recompensed for it”(__QUR_N__): This is for the one whom Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, intends to disgrace. And as for the one who is honored in the sight of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, then Allah overlooks his evil deeds,“the true promise which they were promised”(__QUR_N__).

It is narrated from Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that a man recited the verse: "Whoever does evil will be recompensed for it" and said: Will we be punished for every deed that we have done? Then we are doomed! This matter reached the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), so he said: Yes, a believer is punished for his bad deeds in this world itself, in his life, in his body, and in those things which cause him distress.

Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: O Messenger of Allah! How severe is this verse: ﴿Whoever does evil will be recompensed for it﴾. So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: O Abu Bakr! Whatever calamity befalls in this world is the recompense for a bad deed.
