Ibrahim (may Allah have mercy on him) said: "When a person is killed on the battlefield, he should neither be given a ritual bath nor be perfumed; rather, he should be shrouded in his clothes, in an odd number among them. Those things should be removed from him which are outer garments or socks. And if he is picked up while there is still some life in him, then he should be given a ritual bath, perfumed, and the funeral prayer should be offered for him."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Tariq bin Shihab (may Allah be pleased with him) that Sa’d bin Ubaid, the reciter, who was called a reciter in the time of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), was killed on the day of Qadisiyyah. And he had said: "Do not wash my blood and do not remove any of my clothes except the leather one."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Tariq bin Shihab (may Allah be pleased with him) that at Qadisiyyah, Sa’d bin Ubaid delivered a sermon to us and said:“Tomorrow, we will meet the enemy, insha’Allah, and I have a strong feeling that I will be martyred. So, let no garment be removed from my body except the socks.”

It is narrated from Hasan al-Basri (may Allah have mercy on him) that he used to say regarding the martyr: "He should be given a bath."

It is narrated from Ibrahim (may Allah have mercy on him) that the furwa (hairy garment), socks, soft shoes, and stockings should be removed from the martyr, except in the case where the stockings complete an odd number, then they should be left. And he should be buried in his own clothes.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdur Rahman bin Yazid (may Allah be pleased with him): We set out with an army towards Persia. Among them were Alqamah bin Qais, Mu’addad ‘Ajli, Yazid bin Mu’awiyah Nakha’i, and Amr bin Utbah bin Firqad. We besieged a fortress. There was a sick companion with us, and a grave was dug for him. Yazid bin Mu’awiyah saw in a dream that a white goat was being buried in that grave. Then Yazid went near the fortress, and a stone struck him which killed him. We buried him in that same grave. Then Amr bin Utbah went near the fortress; he was wearing a new white cloak. He said:“How beautiful will be the sight of blood flowing on this.”Then a stone struck him as well, which killed him. Blood flowed on his cloak. We buried him. Then Mu’addad went near the fortress, and a stone struck his head. He said:“This is a small wound; Allah puts blessing even in small things.”Then he died from that wound, and we buried him.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered regarding the martyrs of Uhud that they be taken back to the places where they were killed, after they had been brought to Madinah.

Sayyiduna Alqamah (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates: We fought in jihad in Khurasan during the time of Muawiyah (may Allah be pleased with him). We were besieging a fortress in Khwarazm, and for two years we performed two rak‘ahs with qasr (shortened prayer) and did not omit any obligatory act. With us was Mu‘addad ‘Ajli, who was standing wearing a white cloak. He said:“How good would it be if a mark of blood appeared on this cloak.”As soon as he said this, three stones were thrown from the fortress by a catapult, and one struck him. He passed his hand over the wound and said:“This is minor; Allah brings good even in small things.”We carried him away, and he passed away. Alqamah used to wear that cloak in Kufa, in which the mark of blood remained even after washing, and he used to say:“I like to keep wearing this cloak because it reminds me of Mu‘addad’s blood.”
