Malik bin Hasan narrates from his father, from his grandfather (Sayyiduna Malik bin Huwairith, may Allah be pleased with him): Once, the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) ascended the pulpit. When he placed his foot on the first step, he said: Ameen. When he placed his foot on the second step, he said: Ameen. When he placed his foot on the third step, he said: Ameen. Then he said: Jibreel came to me and said: O Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him)! Whoever finds the month of Ramadan and is not forgiven, may Allah distance him (from His mercy). So I said: Ameen. Jibreel said: Whoever finds his parents, or one of them, and still enters Hell, may Allah distance him (from His mercy). So I said: Ameen. Jibreel said: Whoever, in whose presence your mention is made and he does not send blessings upon you, may Allah distance him (from His mercy), you say Ameen. So I said: Ameen.
(Imam Ibn Hibban, may Allah have mercy on him, says:) In this narration, there is evidence that it is recommended for a person to refrain from seeking help for himself, especially when the person is of such a status that his actions are followed. The reason is: When Jibreel (peace be upon him) said to the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him): "Whoever finds the month of Ramadan and is not forgiven, may Allah distance him from His forgiveness," the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) immediately said: Ameen. Similarly, when Jibreel (peace be upon him) said: "Whoever finds his parents, or one of them, and enters Hell, may Allah distance him from His mercy," (the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, immediately said Ameen). But when Jibreel (peace be upon him) said in your presence: "Whoever, in whose presence your mention is made, and he does not send blessings upon you, may Allah distance him (from His mercy)," the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did not immediately say Ameen, because in this sentence there was a reference to his own self. Until Jibreel (peace be upon him) requested him to say Ameen, then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: I said Ameen. The intention of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in this was to establish an example in this matter that one should not seek help from others for his own self, because Allah is the Helper of His friends in this world and the Hereafter, even if they dislike seeking help from people in this world.
