Section on Responding to Sneezing – How the sneezer should reply to one who blesses him
Hadith Number: 599
اخبرنا عبد الله بن محمد الازدي ، قال: حدثنا إسحاق بن إبراهيم ، قال: حدثنا يحيى بن آدم ، قال: حدثنا إسرائيل ، عن منصور ، عن هلال بن يساف ، قال: كنا مع سالم بن عبيد في غزاة، فعطس رجل من القوم، فقال: السلام عليكم، فقال سالم: السلام عليك وعلى امك، فوجد الرجل في نفسه، فقال له سالم: كانك وجدت في نفسك؟ فقال: ما كنت احب ان تذكر امي بخير ولا بشر، فقال سالم : كنا مع رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم، في سفر فعطس رجل، فقال: السلام عليكم، فقال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم:" عليك وعلى امك، إذا عطس احدكم فليقل: الحمد لله على كل حال، او قال: الحمد لله رب العالمين، وليقل له: يرحمك الله، وليقل هو: يغفر الله لكم" .
Hilal bin Yasaf narrates: I participated in a battle with Salim bin Ubaid. Among those present, a man sneezed and said: "As-salamu alaikum." So Salim said: "Peace be upon you and upon your mother as well." This man disliked it very much. Salim said to him: "Perhaps you disliked this." He replied: "I do not like that my mother be mentioned, whether with good or with bad." So Salim said: "We were on a journey with the Prophet (peace be upon him). A man sneezed and said: 'As-salamu alaikum.' So the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: 'Peace be upon you and upon your mother as well?' When a person sneezes, he should say: 'Alhamdulillah ala kulli hal' or 'Alhamdulillah Rabbil Alameen,' and the other person should reply with: 'Yarhamukallah,' and he should say in response: 'Yaghfirullahu lakum' (May Allah forgive you)."
