Wiping over leather socks and similar: A narration that misled some scholars into thinking wiping over the turban is not allowed
Hadith Number: 1346
Sayyiduna Mughira bin Shu’bah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) wiped over his forehead and his turban while performing ablution. The narrator named Bakr bin Abdullah states: I have also heard this narration from the son of Sayyiduna Mughira bin Shu’bah (may Allah be pleased with him). (Imam Ibn Hibban, may Allah have mercy on him, says:) These words,“He wiped over his forehead and his turban,”have caused confusion for the one who does not have expertise in the science of hadith, and he believes that it is not permissible to wipe over the turban without wiping the forehead. This person has considered the narration transmitted from Amr bin Umayyah as an explanatory narration for this hadith. That is, the narration in which the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) wiped over his turban along with his forehead takes precedence over the narration in which only the forehead is mentioned apart from the turban, because the forehead is part of the head. However, by the grace and mercy of Allah, this is not the case; rather, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) wiped over his head during ablution, and he also wiped over his turban without wiping the forehead, and he wiped over both the forehead and the turban. So these are three separate incidents on three different occasions. One may act upon any one of these Sunnahs, and it is not necessary to make one Sunnah obligatory and consider acting upon the other as disliked.
