Section on Witr prayer – mentioning permission to perform Witr as nine rak’ahs
Hadith Number: 2442
اخبرنا عبد الله بن محمد الازدي ، قال: حدثنا إسحاق بن إبراهيم ، قال: اخبرنا معاذ بن هشام ، قال: حدثنا ابي ، عن قتادة ، عن زرارة بن اوفى ، عن سعد بن هشام ، عن عائشة ، قالت:" كان رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم إذا اوتر بتسع ركعات لم يقعد إلا في الثامنة، فيحمد الله ويذكره ويدعو، ثم ينهض ولا يسلم، ثم يصلي التاسعة ويذكر الله ويدعو، ثم يسلم تسليما يسمعناه، ثم يصلي ركعتين وهو جالس" .
Lady Aisha Siddiqa (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: When the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) performed nine rak‘ahs of Witr, he would only sit after the eighth rak‘ah. Then he would praise Allah Almighty, mention Him, and supplicate to Him. Then he would stand up without saying salam, perform the ninth rak‘ah, mention Allah Almighty, and supplicate to Him. Then he would say salam aloud. After that, he would sit and perform two rak‘ahs.
