Section on Night Prayer - Clarification that the various forms of the Prophet’s (peace be upon him) night prayer are all valid and not contradictory
Hadith Number: 2619
اخبرنا محمد بن إسحاق بن خزيمة ، قال: حدثنا مؤمل بن هشام ، قال: حدثنا إسماعيل بن علية ، عن منصور بن عبد الرحمن ، عن ابي إسحاق الهمداني ، عن مسروق ، انه دخل على عائشة فسالها عن صلاة رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم بالليل، فقالت:" كان يصلي ثلاث عشرة ركعة من الليل، ثم إنه صلى إحدى عشرة ركعة ترك ركعتين، ثم قبض صلى الله عليه وسلم حين قبض وهو يصلي من الليل تسع ركعات آخر صلاته من الليل والوتر، ثم ربما جاء إلى فراشي هذا، فياتيه بلال فيؤذنه بالصلاة" .
Masruq reports: We visited Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) and asked her about the night prayer of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to perform thirteen rak‘ahs at night, then he started performing eleven rak‘ahs, omitting two rak‘ahs. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) passed away, he used to perform nine rak‘ahs at night. The last part of his night prayer would be Witr. Then sometimes he would come to my bed, and then Bilal would come to call him for prayer.
