Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: When Abdullah bin Ubayy passed away, his son came to the service of the Prophet (peace be upon him) and requested: O Messenger of Allah, please give me your shirt so that I may shroud (i.e., my father) in it. Please also perform his funeral prayer and supplicate for his forgiveness. The narrator says: The Prophet (peace be upon him) gave him his shirt and said: When you have finished (washing and shrouding him), inform me so that I may lead his funeral prayer. When he finished and informed the Prophet (peace be upon him), and the Prophet (peace be upon him) stood up to perform his funeral prayer, Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) pulled him and said: Has Allah not forbidden you from performing the funeral prayer for the hypocrites? The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: I have been given a choice between two matters. Allah has said: "Ask forgiveness for them or do not ask forgiveness for them." The narrator states: Then on this occasion, this verse was revealed: "And never (O Muhammad) pray for any of them who dies, nor stand by his grave." The narrator says: So the Prophet (peace be upon him) did not perform his funeral prayer.
