Hadith Number: 3535
Sayyiduna Rafi’ bin Khadij (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said:“The one who gives cupping and the one who gets cupped, their fast is broken.”(Imam Ibn Hibban, may Allah have mercy on him, says:): These two narrations caused a scholar to be mistaken, thinking that they are contradictory, whereas this is not the case, because when the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) had cupping done, he was in the state of fasting and in the state of Ihram. And in no authentic narration has it been reported about the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) that he had cupping done while fasting except in the state of Ihram, and the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) was only in Ihram when he was a traveler. For a traveler, it is permissible to break the fast, whether he does so by having cupping done, or by drinking a sip of water. If he wishes, he may break his fast by drinking a sip of milk or by eating or drinking anything else. The statement of the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him),“The one who gives cupping and the one who gets cupped, their fast is broken,”is, in wording, information about an action, but what is meant by it is to prohibit acting upon this deed.
