Chapter on What Is Reported About the Hajj and Umrah of the Prophet – On the Reason Why Umar ibn al-Khattab Forbade Tamattu’ with Umrah to Hajj
Hadith Number: 3940
اخبرنا عمر بن محمد الهمداني ، قال: حدثنا محمد بن عبد الاعلى ، قال: حدثنا خالد بن الحارث ، قال: حدثنا شعبة ، عن قتادة ، قال: سمعت ابا نضرة يحدث، قال: كان ابن عباس يامرنا بالمتعة، وكان ابن الزبير ينهى عنها، فذكرت ذلك لجابر ، فقال: على يدي دار الحديث، تمتعنا مع رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم . فلما كان عمر بن الخطاب ، قال:" إن الله كان يحل لنبيه صلى الله عليه وسلم ما شاء لما شاء، وإن القرآن قد نزل منازله، فاتموا الحج والعمرة كما امركم الله، وابتوا نكاح هذه النساء، فلا اوتى برجل تزوج امراة إلى اجل إلا رجمته بالحجارة" .
Abu Nazrah reports: Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) used to instruct us regarding Hajj Tamattu’, while Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Zubair (may Allah be pleased with them both) used to prohibit it. I mentioned this matter to Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him), so he said: Now the matter will be clarified through me. We performed Hajj Tamattu’ along with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). When the era of Sayyiduna Umar bin Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) came, he said: Indeed, Allah Almighty made lawful for His Prophet whatever He wished and for as long as He wished, and the Qur’an has its own specific rulings. You people should complete Hajj and ‘Umrah as Allah Almighty has commanded you, and refrain from Nikah Mut’ah. If anyone is brought to me who has married a woman for a specified period, I will stone him with stones.
