Chapter on What Is Permitted and Not Permitted for the Muhrim – On Clarifying That the Prophet Ate from the Wild Donkey Hunted by Abu Qatadah on That Journey
Hadith Number: 3977
اخبرنا احمد بن علي بن المثنى ، قال: حدثنا بشر بن الوليد الكندي ، قال: حدثنا فليح بن سليمان ، عن ابي حازم ، عن عبد الله بن ابي قتادة ، عن ابي قتادة ، قال: خرجت مع رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم، فاحرم القوم كلهم غيري، فراينا حمار وحش، فاسرجت والجمت، ثم ركبت، واخذت الرمح، ونسيت السوط، فسالتهم ان يناولونيه فابوا، فنزلت فاخذت سوطي، ثم ضربت الحمار فعقرته، فاكل منه بعض القوم، وترك بعض، فلما اتى رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم قال:" قد اصاب الذين اكلوا، هل معكم منه شيء"، قال: قلنا: نعم هذه رجل، فاكل منه رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم .
Sayyiduna Abu Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I set out with the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him); all the other people had put on Ihram except me. We saw a wild donkey (i.e., a zebra), so I put a saddle on (my horse), put on the bridle, and mounted it. I took hold of a spear, but forgot to pick up a stick. I said to my companions: Hand me the stick, but they did not comply with my request. I got down from the horse, picked up my stick, then attacked the zebra and killed it. Some people ate its meat and some did not. When the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) arrived, he said: Those who ate its meat did the right thing. Do you have any part of its meat with you? We said: Yes, here is a leg. So the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) ate it.
