Chapter on Caliphate and Leadership – Prohibition of seeking leadership lest one be left to it
Hadith Number: 4480
اخبرنا الفضل بن الحباب ، قال: حدثنا عبد الرحمن بن سلام الجمحي ، قال: حدثنا المبارك بن فضالة ، عن الحسن ، عن عبد الرحمن بن سمرة ، ان النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم، قال له: يا عبد الرحمن " لا تسال الإمارة، فإنك إن اوتيتها عن مسالة وكلت إليها، وإن اوتيتها عن غير مسالة اعنت عليها، وإذا حلفت على يمين ورايت غيرها خيرا منها، فات الذي هو خير وكفر عن يمينك" .
Sayyiduna Abdur Rahman bin Samurah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: O Abdur Rahman! Do not ask for a position of authority, because if it is given to you as a result of your asking, you will be left to manage it yourself, but if it is given to you without your asking, you will be helped in it. And when you take an oath and then see something else that is better than it, then do what is better and offer expiation for your oath.

Hadith Number: 4481
اخبرنا ابو يعلى ، قال: حدثنا ابو كريب ، قال: حدثنا ابو اسامة ، عن بريد ، عن ابي بردة ، عن ابي موسى ، قال: دخلت على رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم انا ورجلان من بني عمي، فقال احد الرجلين: يا رسول الله، امرنا على بعض ما ولاك الله، وقال الآخر مثل ذلك، فقال النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم: " إنا والله لا نولي على هذا العمل احدا ساله، ولا احدا حرص عليه" .
Sayyiduna Abu Musa Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I and my two cousins went to the service of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). One of them said: O Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him)! Appoint us as officials over some matter from the authority which Allah has granted you. The other person also said something similar. So the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: By Allah! We do not appoint to this responsibility anyone who asks for it, nor anyone who is eager for it.
