Chapter on Caliphate and Leadership - On the exclusion from Paradise of a leader who deceives his people
Hadith Number: 4495
اخبرنا احمد بن علي بن المثنى ، قال: حدثنا شيبان بن ابي شيبة ، قال: حدثنا ابو الاشهب جعفر بن حيان العطاردي ، قال: حدثنا الحسن ، قال: عاد عبيد الله بن زياد معقل بن يسار في مرضه الذي مات فيه، فقال معقل : إني محدثك بحديث سمعته من رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم، لو علمت ان لي حياة ما حدثتك به، سمعت رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم، يقول: " ما من عبد يسترعيه الله رعية، يموت يوم يموت وهو غاش لرعيته، إلا حرم الله عليه الجنة" .
Hasan al-Basri narrates: Ubaydullah bin Ziyad came to visit Sayyiduna Ma'qil bin Yasar (may Allah be pleased with him) during his illness, and this was the illness in which he passed away. So Sayyiduna Ma'qil (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I am going to narrate to you a hadith which I heard from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). If I knew that I would live longer, I would not narrate this hadith to you. I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "Whenever Allah entrusts a servant with the responsibility of overseeing others, and he dies while deceiving those under his care, Allah makes Paradise forbidden for that person."
