Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Whoever takes an oath and is lying in it, and his intention is to seize wealth through it, then when he will appear before Allah Almighty, Allah will be angry with him. To confirm this, the following verse was revealed in the Book of Allah:“Indeed, those who exchange Allah’s covenant for a small price...”Meanwhile, Sayyiduna Ash’ath bin Qais (may Allah be pleased with him) passed by while the people were discussing this hadith in the mosque. He inquired,“What is Ibn Umm Abd narrating?”The people informed him about it, so he said:“He has spoken the truth; this verse was revealed about me and my opponent. We had a dispute over a well, which I claimed as mine. Neither of us had any proof, so the other person took an oath regarding it. On that occasion, the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) mentioned this.”
