Section on Beverages - Allah's Prohibition of Alcohol for Muslims After It Was Previously Permitted
Hadith Number: 5351
اخبرنا الفضل بن الحباب ، قال: حدثنا ابو الوليد ، قال: حدثنا شعبة ، قال: انبانا ابو إسحاق السبيعي ، عن البراء بن عازب ، قال: " مات ناس من اصحاب النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم وهم يشربون الخمر، فلما حرمت، قال ناس من اصحاب النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم: كيف باصحابنا ماتوا وهم يشربونها؟ فنزلت هذه الآية: ليس على الذين آمنوا وعملوا الصالحات جناح فيما طعموا سورة المائدة آية 93" .
Sayyiduna Bara bin Azib (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: Some companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) passed away in such a state that they used to drink alcohol. When alcohol was declared forbidden, some companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) asked: What will happen to our companions who died in such a state that they used to drink alcohol? Then this verse was revealed: "Those who believed and did righteous deeds, there is no sin upon them for what they consumed."
