Sahih Ibn Hibban
كِتَابُ إِخْبَارِهِ ﷺ عَنْ مَنَاقِبِ الصَّحَابَةِ رِجَالِهِمْ وَنِسَائِهِمْ بِذِكْرِ أَسْمَائِهِمْ رِضْوَانُ اللَّهِ عَلَيْهِمْ أَجْمَعِينَ
Book of the Prophet’s ﷺ Reports on the Virtues of the Companions, Men and Women, by Name
ذكر عمرو بن العاص السهمي رضي الله عنه - ذكر أبي سفيان بن حرب رضي الله عنه-
Hadith Number: 7209
اخبرنا احمد بن محمد الشرقي ، حدثنا احمد بن يوسف السلمي ، حدثنا النضر بن محمد ، حدثنا عكرمة بن عمار ، حدثنا ابو زميل سماك الحنفي ، عن ابن عباس ، قال:" كان المسلمون لا ينظرون إلى ابي سفيان، ولا يجالسونه، فقال: يا رسول الله، ثلاث خصال اسالك ان تعطينيهن؟ قال: وما هي؟ قال: عندي اجمل العرب واحسنها ام حبيبة ازوجكها، قال: نعم، قال: ومعاوية تجعله كاتبا بين يديك، قال: نعم، قال: وتؤمرني حتى اقاتل المشركين كما كنت اقاتل المسلمين، قال: نعم" .
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: Previously, Muslims would not look towards Abu Sufyan, nor would they keep his company. He (Abu Sufyan) submitted: O Messenger of Allah! I request three things from you, that you grant them to me. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: What are they? He submitted: My daughter is among the beautiful and attractive women of the Arabs, Umm Habibah; I wish to marry her to you. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Alright. Abu Sufyan submitted: Appoint Muawiyah as your confidant. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Alright. Abu Sufyan submitted: Command me to fight against the polytheists, just as previously I fought against the Muslims. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Alright.
