Chapter: What Has Been Reported Regarding the Reality of Magic and Its Effect by Allah's Will and the Threat to Those Who Believe Otherwise
Hadith Number: 6803
It is narrated from Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her), she says: A Jew from Banu Zuraiq named Labid bin A'sam cast magic upon the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), to the extent that its effect was such that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would think he had done something, while in fact he had not done it. This continued until one day the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) made supplication, then made supplication again and said: "Aisha! I have understood that Allah Almighty has accepted my supplication. Two men came to me, one sat by my head and the other by my feet. The one sitting by my head said to the one by my feet, or the one by my feet said to the one by my head: 'What is wrong with this man?' He replied: 'He has been affected by magic.' He asked: 'Who has done magic on him?' He replied: 'Labid bin A'sam.' He asked: 'In what?' He replied: 'In a comb, in the hair that falls out during combing, and in the cover of a male date palm's spadix.' He asked: 'Where is this (magic) now?' He replied: 'It is in the well of Arwan.' Sayyida (Aisha) says: People went towards that well. In one narration: The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) himself went towards that well. There were date palms growing by it. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) returned and said: 'O Aisha! Its water looked as if henna had been soaked in it, and its date palms looked like the heads of devils.' I said: 'O Messenger of Allah! Why did you not burn (the object of magic) after taking it out?' In one narration: 'You should burn it.' The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'No, Allah Almighty has granted me well-being, and now I dislike to spread this evil unnecessarily among the people.' Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered and it was buried.

(Second chain) The Noble Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, remained in this state for six months that he would see that he had done something, but in reality, he had not done it. Then two angels came to him; one sat by his head and the other by his feet. One of them said to the other: What is his condition? He replied: He is under a spell. He asked: Who has done magic on him? He replied: Labeed bin A'sam has. He asked: In what has it been done? He replied: In a comb and in the hair that falls out during combing, and this act is under a stone in the well of Zarwan, inside the sheath of a male date palm's spadix. Meanwhile, the Noble Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, woke up from sleep and said: O Aisha! Do you not see that Allah Almighty has accepted my supplication? Then he came to the well and ordered that the act be taken out. Then he, peace and blessings be upon him, said: This is the well that was shown to me. By Allah! Its water looked as if henna had been soaked in it, and the tops of its date palms were like the heads of devils. Lady Aisha, may Allah be pleased with her, said: Why did you not have it treated with ruqyah? He, peace and blessings be upon him, said: Allah Almighty has granted me well-being, and I do not want this evil to spread among the people.

(The third chain) A similar hadith is narrated, except that in it, it is mentioned: That act (of magic) is in the comb and the hair that falls out while combing, and in the sheath of the spadix of a male date-palm. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: Where is it? They said: In the well of Dhi Arwan. Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) said: I said: O Messenger of Allah! Why did you not take out that act for the people? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Allah Almighty has cured me, and I do not want to stir up evil among the people.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Zaid bin Arqam (may Allah be pleased with him) that a man from among the Jews cast magic upon the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), due to which he (peace and blessings be upon him) remained ill for several days. Eventually, Jibreel (peace be upon him) came and said: "A man from among the Jews has cast magic upon you and for this purpose, he has tied magical knots. This act of magic is placed in such-and-such well. Send someone to bring out this act." So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sent Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), who brought it out and untied those knots. It was as if the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had been released from a rope. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) neither mentioned this matter to that Jew nor looked towards his face, until he died.

‘Umrah narrates that Sayyidah ‘A’ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) became ill and her illness prolonged. A man came to Madinah Munawwarah who practiced medicine and wisdom. The nephews of Sayyidah ‘A’ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) went to this physician and inquired about the ailment of Sayyidah ‘A’ishah (may Allah be pleased with her). He said: By Allah! From what you are describing, it appears that this woman has been afflicted by magic, and her slave-girl has performed magic on her. When the slave-girl was questioned, she said: Yes! I did perform magic. I wanted you to die quickly so that I would become free. In fact, that slave-girl was a mudabbirah (a slave promised freedom after the master’s death). Sayyidah ‘A’ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: Sell her to the person who is the strictest in Arabia regarding slave-girls, and buy another slave-girl like her with her price.

Bajalah says: I was the scribe of Juz’ bin Mu’awiyah, who was the uncle of Ahnaf bin Qais. We received a letter from Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), and this was one year before his death. In it, it was written:“Kill every male and female sorcerer, separate every prohibited relationship among the Magians, and prevent them from chanting incantations.”After this command, we killed three sorcerers and separated those in unlawful relationships according to the Book of Allah. Juz’ had a large amount of food prepared and invited the Magians, placing his sword on his thigh. They ate the food without chanting incantations, and they gave as much silver as would be the load of a mule or two as jizya. However, Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) did not take this jizya from them. Sometimes Sufyan, the narrator, would relate it thus: Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) was not in favor of taking jizya from the Magians, until Sayyiduna Abdur Rahman bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with him) testified that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had taken jizya from the Magians of the region of Hajar. Then Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) began to accept jizya from the Magians.

Chapter: What Has Been Reported Regarding Soothsaying, Its Origin, and How the Soothsayer Is Believed in Some Matters
Hadith Number: 6812
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was present among a group of companions. Abdur Razzaq said: These were Ansari people with whom you were sitting. Meanwhile, a very large star was shot, and its light spread. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: When this used to happen in the time of ignorance, what did you say? They said: We used to say that either a great man has been born or a great person has died. I asked Zuhri: Were stars also shot in the time of ignorance? He said: Yes, but when the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was sent, their intensity increased. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: These stars are not shot because of anyone’s death or life. The reason is that when our Lord, Blessed and Exalted, decides upon a matter, the angels who carry the Throne say“Subhan Allah,”then the angels of the nearest heaven say“Subhan Allah,”until this beautiful sound of“Subhan Allah”spreads to the heaven of the world. Then the angels of the heavens try to obtain information from the Throne-bearing angels near them. Those near the Throne ask them: What has your Lord said? They inform them, and each group of angels of the heavens informs those of the lower heaven, until the news reaches the angels of the heaven of the world. Meanwhile, the jinn snatch a portion of this information by stealing, and a star is thrown at them. Whatever part of the news they manage to bring, that is true, but they mix lies with it and exaggerate, and according to another narration, they decrease from it. Abdur Razzaq said: The jinn snatch the words of revelation, but then a star is thrown at them.
