Narrated Um Salama: Once Allah's Apostle said, "You people present your cases to me and some of you may be more eloquent and persuasive in presenting their argument. So, if I give some one's right to another (wrongly) because of the latter's (tricky) presentation of the case, I am really giving him a piece of fire; so he should not take it."

‘And Imam Hasan al-Basri (may Allah have mercy on him) fulfilled it.’ And Allah the Exalted mentioned our master Isma'il (peace be upon him) with this attribute, that he was true to his promise. And Sa'id bin al-Ashwa' commanded to fulfill the promise. And the same is narrated from Samurah bin Jundub (may Allah be pleased with him), and Miswar bin Makhramah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) mentioning one of his sons-in-law (Abu al-‘As), and he (peace be upon him) said: He made a promise to me and fulfilled it. Abu ‘Abdullah (Imam Bukhari, may Allah have mercy on him) said: I saw Ishaq bin Ibrahim using the hadith of Ibn Ashwa’ as evidence for the obligation of fulfilling promises.

Narrated `Abdullah bin `Abbas: Abu Sufyan told me that Heraclius said to him, "When I inquired you what he (i.e. Muhammad) ordered you, you replied that he ordered you to establish the prayer, to speak the truth, to be chaste, to keep promises and to pay back trusts." Then Heraclius added, "These are really the qualities of a prophet."

Narrated Muhammad bin `Ali: Jabir bin `Abdullah said, "When the Prophet died, Abu Bakr received some property from Al-`Ala bin Al-Hadrami. Abu Bakr said to the people, "Whoever has a money claim on the Prophet, or was promised something by him, should come to us (so that we may pay him his right)." Jabir added, "I said (to Abu Bakr), Allah's Apostle promised me that he would give me this much, and this much, and this much (spreading his hands three times)." Jabir added, "Abu Bakr counted for me and handed me five-hundred (gold pieces), and then five-hundred, and then five-hundred."

Narrated Sa`id bin Jubair: A Jew from Hira asked me which one of the two periods Musa (i.e. Prophet Moses) completed. I said, "I don't know, (but wait) till I see the most learned 'Arab and inquire him about it." So, I went to Ibn `Abbas and asked him. He replied, "Moses completed the longer and better period." Ibn `Abbas added, "No doubt, an apostle of Allah always does what he says."

'And Sha’bi said: It is not permissible to accept the testimony of people of other religions against one another, because of Allah’s statement: «فأغرينا بينهم العداوة والبغضاء‏» "We have stirred up enmity and hatred among them." Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated from the Prophet (peace be upon him) that regarding the People of the Book (in their religious traditions), neither affirm nor deny them, but rather say: We believe in Allah and in whatever He has revealed.

Narrated Ubaidullah bin `Abdullah bin `Utba: Ibn `Abbas said, "O Muslims? How do you ask the people of the Scriptures, though your Book (i.e. the Qur'an) which was revealed to His Prophet is the most recent information from Allah and you recite it, the Book that has not been distorted? Allah has revealed to you that the people of the scriptures have changed with their own hands what was revealed to them and they have said (as regards their changed Scriptures): This is from Allah, in order to get some worldly benefit thereby." Ibn `Abbas added: "Isn't the knowledge revealed to you sufficient to prevent you from asking them? By Allah I have never seen any one of them asking (Muslims) about what has been revealed to you."

And the statement of Allah the Exalted «إذ يلقون أقلامهم أيهم يكفل مريم» : "When they cast their pens (lots) to decide which of them should take care of Mary." Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said (in the explanation of the mentioned Ayah) that when all the people cast their pens (in the River Jordan), all the pens flowed away with the current, but the pen of Zakariya (peace be upon him) rose above the current. Therefore, he took the responsibility of raising Mary (peace be upon her). And the meaning of the statement of Allah the Exalted «فساهم» is: so they cast lots. In «فكان من المدحضين» (the meaning of «مدحضين» is) «من المسهومين» , that is, the lot came out in his name. Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) said that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) (in a certain case, due to being the defendant) told some people to take an oath, so they all stepped forward (at once). Therefore, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) ordered that lots be drawn among them to decide who would take the oath first.

Narrated An-Nu`man bin Bashir: The Prophet said, "The example of the person abiding by Allah's orders and limits (or the one who abides by the limits and regulations prescribed by Allah) in comparison to the one who do wrong and violate Allah's limits and orders is like the example of people drawing lots for seats in a boat. Some of them got seats in the upper part while the others in the lower part ; those in the, lower part have to pass by those in the upper one to get water, and that troubled the latter. One of them (i.e. the people in the lower part) took an ax and started making a hole in the bottom of the boat. The people of the upper part came and asked him, (saying), 'What is wrong with you?' He replied, "You have been troubled much by my (coming up to you), and I have to get water.' Now if they prevent him from doing that they will save him and themselves, but if they leave him (to do what he wants), they will destroy him and themselves."
