Explanation of the verse:“He is Allah who sent down the Book upon you...”(Surah Al Imran: 7)
Umm al-Mu'mineen Aisha Siddiqa (may Allah be pleased with her) says that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) recited this verse: "He is Allah, Who has sent down to you the Book; in it are clear, firm verses—they are the foundation of the Book—and others are ambiguous. So those in whose hearts is a disease of hypocrisy follow that which is ambiguous from it, seeking discord and seeking its interpretation. But no one knows its true interpretation except Allah. And those firmly grounded in knowledge say: 'We believe in it; all is from our Lord.' And none take heed except those of understanding." Then he said: "When you see those who follow the ambiguous verses, then know that Allah has mentioned them (in the Qur'an), so beware of their company."

Allah’s saying:“Those who sell Allah’s covenant and their oaths for a small price...”(Surah Al Imran: 77)
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) that a dispute between two women was mentioned to him. They were sitting in a house or a small room, sewing a sock. Meanwhile, one of them went outside and a sewing needle (awl) pricked her palm. She made a claim against the other woman (who was with her). When this case was brought before Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them), he said that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "If people were given (judgments) based on their claims, many people's blood and wealth would be lost." You should warn the other woman (the defendant) to fear Allah and recite this verse to her: "Indeed, those who exchange the covenant of Allah and their oaths for a small price..." When the people did this, (she became afraid and) confessed to the crime. Then Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) said that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "The oath is upon the defendant."

Allah’s saying:“The disbelievers have gathered against you...”(Surah Al Imran: 173)
Narrated Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) that ((Hasbunallahu wa ni‘mal wakeel)) was said by Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him) when he was thrown into the fire, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) also said these words when people said to him: "The disbelievers of Quraysh have gathered a great army against you, so fear them." Upon hearing this news, the faith of the companions (may Allah be pleased with them) increased and they said the same: "Allah alone is sufficient for us, and He is the best disposer of affairs."

Allah’s saying:“You will surely hear much that will grieve you from those given the Book before you and from the polytheists...”(Surah Al Imran: 186)
`Sayyiduna Usama bin Zaid (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) rode on a donkey on which there was a cloth (made in the city) of Fadak, and Usama bin Zaid (may Allah be pleased with him) was seated behind him. The Prophet (peace be upon him) was going to visit Sayyiduna Sa’d bin Ubadah (may Allah be pleased with him) in the locality of Banu Harith bin Khazraj. This incident took place before the Battle of Badr. On the way, he passed by a gathering in which Abdullah bin Ubayy bin Salul (the well-known hypocrite) was sitting; at that time, Abdullah bin Ubayy had not (even outwardly) accepted Islam. In that gathering, there were all kinds of people: some Muslims, some idol-worshipping polytheists, and some Jews. Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Rawahah (may Allah be pleased with him, the famous companion) was also present in that gathering. When the dust from the donkey’s feet began to reach the people of the gathering (i.e., the ride came near), Abdullah bin Ubayy covered his nose with his cloth and said,“Do not scatter dust upon us.”The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) greeted them with salam, then stopped, dismounted from his ride, and began to recite the Qur’an to them and invited (the people of the gathering) towards Allah. At that time, Abdullah bin Ubayy said,“O man! Even though your speech is very good, even if it is true, do not recite it in our gatherings. Go to your own house, and whoever comes to you there, tell him these stories.”Abdullah bin Rawahah (may Allah be pleased with him) said,“O Messenger of Allah! No, rather you must come to every one of our gatherings. It is very pleasing to us, O sinner.”At this, the Muslims, polytheists, and Jews began to quarrel and were close to fighting, so the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) began to calm them all down, and eventually, they all became silent. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) mounted his ride and went to Sayyiduna Sa’d bin Ubadah (may Allah be pleased with him) and said to him:“O Sa’d! Did you not hear what Abu Hubab said?”By Abu Hubab, the Prophet (peace be upon him) meant Abdullah bin Ubayy.“He said such and such.”Sayyiduna Sa’d bin Ubadah (may Allah be pleased with him) submitted,“O Messenger of Allah! Please forgive him and overlook him. By the One Who revealed the Book upon you, whatever has been revealed to you from Allah is true and right. (The reason is that) the people of this town (before your coming) had decided to crown Abdullah bin Ubayy as their chief and make him their leader and ruler. But when Allah did not will this (i.e., Abdullah bin Ubayy’s leadership) because of the truth that He granted you, he considered it your fault, so forgive him.”And it was the blessed habit of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) and his companions to forgive such indecent acts of idolaters and Jews, as Allah had commanded them:“And surely you will hear much hurt from those who were given the Book before you and from those who associate others with Allah, but if you are patient, that is indeed a matter of great determination.”And Allah the Exalted said:“Many of the People of the Book wish to turn you back to disbelief after you have believed, out of envy from themselves, even after the truth has become clear to them.”(up to the end of the verse). And they used to be patient over their harm, until Allah commanded them to fight. When the Prophet (peace be upon him) fought in Badr, Allah killed the great chiefs of the Quraysh, so Abdullah bin Ubayy bin Salul and those polytheists and idolaters who were with him said,“Now the opportunity (to join this religion) has come (as it has become dominant), so now pledge allegiance to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) on Islam.”Thus, all of them (outwardly) became Muslims.

Allah’s saying:“Those who rejoice in what they have done...”(Surah Al Imran: 188)
Narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id Khudri, may Allah be pleased with him, that in the time of the Noble Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, there were some hypocrites who outwardly became Muslims. When the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, would go out for jihad, they would stay behind (in Madinah) and would be happy at not going with the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him. Then when he, peace and blessings be upon him, would return from jihad, they would make various excuses and swear oaths (that due to such and such reasons we could not go), and they liked to be praised for deeds they had not done. So this verse was revealed about them: "Those who rejoice for what they have done, and love to be praised for what they did not do..."

It was said to Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them): "Every person is happy with the blessings he has received, and he also likes to be praised for deeds he has not done. And Allah has said that there will be punishment for this in the Hereafter. If this is the case, then surely all of us will be punished." So Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) replied: "What concern do you have with this story? Indeed, this was revealed at the time when one day the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) called some Jews and asked them about a matter of religion. They concealed the real matter and told something incorrect, then thought that they would be considered worthy of praise in the sight of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) because they had answered what he asked, and they were very pleased with this (deception and concealing the truth)."
