Giving gifts to one whose faith is at risk
Sayyiduna Sa’d bin Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with him) says that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) distributed some wealth, so I said,“O Messenger of Allah! Give it to so-and-so, for he is a believer.”The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) replied,“Or he is a Muslim.”I said this three times, that he is a believer, and each time the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) replied,“Or he is a Muslim.”Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:“I give to a person while I love someone else more than him, fearing that Allah may throw him on his face into the Hellfire.”

Giving to those inclined to Islam, not to strong believers
Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) says that when the day of Hunayn came, the people of (the tribe of) Hawazin and Ghatafan and other tribes brought their children and animals, and there were ten thousand warriors with the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), and also the people of Makkah (who had become Muslim at the time of the conquest of Makkah), who were called Tulaqa. Then all of them turned their backs at once, until the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was left alone. Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) says that on that day, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) called out twice, without saying anything in between. First, he turned his face to the right and called out, "O group of Ansar!" So the Ansar replied, "O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)! We are present, and may you be pleased, we are with you." Then he turned his face to the left and called out, "O group of Ansar!" So they again replied, "O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)! We are present, and may you be pleased, we are with you." And on that day, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was riding a white mule. He dismounted and said, "I am the servant of Allah (there is no station of pride greater than the station of servitude; Shaykh Akbar has explained this well, that the station of servitude is specific to the Prophets and no one else shares in this station. Glory be to Allah, being the servant of Allah and His Messenger is such a great blessing), and (I am) the Messenger." So the polytheists were defeated. And the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) received a great amount of spoils of war, so he distributed it among all the Muhajirin and the people of Makkah, and gave nothing to the Ansar. Then the Ansar said, "In times of difficulty, we are called, and the spoils are given to others." When this news reached the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), he gathered them in a tent and said, "O group of Ansar! What is this that has reached me from you?" Then they remained silent, so the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, "O group of Ansar! Are you not pleased that people take the world and you take Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) to your homes?" They said, "Indeed, O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)! We are pleased." Then the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, "If people walk in one valley and the Ansar in another valley, I will take the path of the Ansar's valley." Hisham (the student of Sayyiduna Anas) said, "I said, 'O Abu Hamzah! Were you present at that time?' He replied, 'Where would I go, leaving the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)?'"

Sayyiduna Rafi’ bin Khadij (may Allah be pleased with him) says that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) gave Abu Sufyan, Safwan, ‘Uyainah, and Aqra’ bin Habis one hundred camels each, and gave ‘Abbas bin Mirdas (may Allah be pleased with him) a little less. So ‘Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) recited these verses: (Translation)“You (peace and blessings be upon him) have set my share and that of my horse, whose name was ‘Ubayd, between ‘Uyainah and Aqra’, even though ‘Uyainah and Aqra’ cannot surpass Mirdas (i.e., me) in any gathering, and I am not less than either of them. And today, whoever’s word is put down will not be raised again.”Sayyiduna Rafi’ (may Allah be pleased with him) says that then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) completed his hundred camels.

Sayyiduna Abu Sa’id Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) sent some gold from Yemen to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), wrapped in a leather bag that had been tanned with acacia bark, and the gold had not yet been separated from the dust. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) distributed it among four men: ‘Uyainah bin Hisn, Aqra’ bin Habis, Zayd (known as) Khayl, and the fourth was either ‘Alqamah or ‘Amir bin Tufayl (may Allah be pleased with them). One of the companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said,“We are more deserving of this wealth than these people.”When this news reached the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), he said,“Do you not trust me, even though I am the trustee of the One who is above the heavens, and news from the heavens comes to me morning and evening?”

Then he says that a man stood up whose eyes were deep-set, whose cheekbones were prominent, with a protruding forehead, thick beard, shaved head, and his lower garment was raised high. He stood up and said,“O Messenger of Allah! Fear Allah.”The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) replied,“Woe to you! Am I not the most God-fearing among all the people of the earth?”The narrator says that then the man went away. Sayyiduna Khalid bin Walid (may Allah be pleased with him) said,“O Messenger of Allah! Shall I not strike his neck?”The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said,“No, perhaps he prays.”(It is understood that he was not often present in the blessed service, otherwise such an act would not have occurred.) Sayyiduna Khalid (may Allah be pleased with him) said,“Many who pray are such (hypocrites) that they say with their tongues what is not in their hearts.”The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said,“Allah has not commanded me to cut open people’s hearts, nor to split open their bellies.”Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) looked towards him as he was walking away and said,“From the progeny of this man will come people who will recite the Qur’an beautifully, but it will not go beyond their throats. They will go out of the religion as an arrow passes through the prey.”(The narrator says) I think the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) also said,“If I find that group, I will kill them as the people of Thamud were killed.”

Charity is not lawful for the Prophet and his family
`Sayyiduna Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) reports that Hasan bin Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) took a date from the charity and put it in his mouth, so the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Spit it out, spit it out! Throw it away. Do you not know that charity is not lawful for us?"

Dislike of appointing Prophet’s family to collect charity
‘Abdul Muttalib bin Rabee’ah bin Harith says that Rabee’ah (may Allah be pleased with him) bin Harith and Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) bin Abdul Muttalib both gathered and said,“By Allah, let us send these two boys (i.e., me and Fadl bin Abbas) to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and let them go and request that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) appoint them as collectors over the zakat. And they will bring it to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) as others do, and they will receive something as others receive.”While this conversation was taking place, Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) bin Abi Talib also came and stood by them, so both of them mentioned this to Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him). Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said,“Do not send them, for by Allah! The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) will not do this.”(Because he knew that zakat is forbidden for the Sayyids.) So Rabee’ah bin Harith began to speak ill of Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) and said,“By Allah, you are doing this out of jealousy towards us. And by Allah, the honor you have attained by being the son-in-law of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), we do not envy you for that at all.”Then Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said,“Fine, send them both.”So we both went, and Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) lay down. Then, when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had finished the Zuhr prayer, we both quickly reached the chamber before the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and stood by the chamber until the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) arrived. He took hold of our ears (this was the Messenger of Allah’s affection and playfulness, as boys are pleased by this) and said,“Reveal what you have hidden in your hearts.”Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) also entered the chamber, and we did too, and that day the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was with Umm al-Mu’minin Zaynab (may Allah be pleased with her). Then we said to each other,“You speak.”So one of us said,“O Messenger of Allah! You are the most dutiful in maintaining ties of kinship and the most beneficent to relatives, and we have reached the age of marriage. We have come so that you may appoint us as collectors over these zakat funds, so that we may bring them to you as others do, and we may receive something as others receive.”(So that we may cover the expenses of our marriage.) Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) remained silent for a long time until we wished to speak again, and Umm al-Mu’minin Zaynab (may Allah be pleased with her) signaled to us from behind the curtain not to say anything further. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said,“Zakat is not suitable for the family of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him); it is the filth of the people.”(Perhaps this is where the saying comes from that money is the dirt of the hands.)“Bring to me Mahmiya (may Allah be pleased with him)”(he was the treasurer of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, appointed over the khums)“and Naufal bin Harith bin Abdul Muttalib.”The narrator said,“Then both of them came, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to Mahmiya (may Allah be pleased with him), ‘Marry your daughter to this boy, Fadl bin Abbas.’ So he married his daughter to him. And he said to Naufal bin Harith, ‘Marry your daughter to this boy (i.e., Abdul Muttalib bin Rabee’ah, who is the narrator of the hadith).’ So he gave his daughter to me in marriage. And he said to Mahmiya, ‘Pay the dowry of both of them from the khums, such and such amount.’ Zuhri said, ‘My teacher Abdullah bin Abdullah did not mention to me the amount of the dowry.’”

Charity sent as a gift to Prophet’s family is permissible
`Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) reports that Barirah (may Allah be pleased with her) gave some meat as a gift to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), which had been given to her as charity by someone. So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) accepted it and said: "It is charity for her and a gift for us."

Lady Umm ‘Atiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sent me a goat as charity, so I sent some of its meat to Umm al-Mu’minin ‘A’ishah al-Siddiqah (may Allah be pleased with her). Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came to Umm al-Mu’minin ‘A’ishah al-Siddiqah (may Allah be pleased with her) and asked:“Do you have any food?”She replied:“No, except that Nasibah (i.e., Umm ‘Atiyyah) sent us some meat from the goat which you had sent to her as charity.”So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:“It has reached its place. (Meaning: It was charity for them, but now for us it is a gift.)”

Prophet accepting gifts and returning charity
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that it was the noble habit of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that when food would come, he would ask about it; if it was a gift, he would eat it, and if it was charity, he would not eat it.
